On your mark, get set, eat! Knowing when and what to eat is central in achieving performance and body composition goals. For the next few weeks, I will share with you some KEY tips in making a performance plate best fit for your training/game time energy needs. Let’s start with a heavy training day. A heavy training day is defined as high intensity and or high volume exercise/training lasting longer than 60-90 minutes. Heavy training may encompass multiple training sessions, such as practice followed by strength & conditioning and weights or, depending on the sport, pre-/post-game fueling (e.g. football, tri-athlete, ironman). For heavy training days, shoot for 50% of your plate being carbohydrates, 25% lean protein, and 25% fruits and vegetables. Carbohydrates should take up half of your plate, as this macronutrient is our body’s primary fuel source – being broken down first to make energy for performance. Protein is essential in assisting with muscle maintenance – preventing muscle breakdown, recovery and repair. A quarter of your plate should make up fruits and vegetables to optimize nutrient intake of fiber, vitamins and minerals.
