Bucs sign 7 to letters of intent

The Bucs signed seven local student-athletes to NJCAA letters of intent yesterday, in ceremonies held at Atlantic Cape’s Mays Landing Campus and the Atlantic County Institute of Technology (ACIT). 

Baseball

For next season, the Bucs signed six Cape Atlantic League (CAL) players:

From Egg Harbor Township HS; Antonio Caraballo of Egg Harbor Township, pitcher and third baseman.  Caraballo is a Cape-Atlantic Honorable Mention selection; and second baseman/outfielder Ryan Summers.

From Atlantic City HS, the Bucs signed catcher Andy Nunez Santos of Atlantic City and outfield Usiel Marmalejos of Brigantine.

From Oakcrest, the Bucs signed pitcher David Sidwell of Mays Landing; and from Absegami pitcher/outfielder Gordon Neil III of Galloway.

Basketball

Courtney Hartman of Estell Manor has signed to play Women’s Basketball.  Hartman, 18, graduates from the Atlantic County Technical Institute (ACIT) this month.  Hartman was a 2nd team All CAL selection in her junior year.

Bucs women defeat #7 Brookdale

LYNCROFT-After 13 tries, the women’s basketball team has finally defeated the Brookdale Jersey Blues.  The Bucs won 73-59 in Lyncroft on Saturday, ending a streak which has lasted more years than anyone cares to remember.

Barbara Gedeon scored 20 points, and had 10 rebounds.  She is currently ranked 11th in the nation in scoring.  Dana Donahue had 15 points, and added 6 assists.

The Bucs are off until November 17th, when they play at Camden County College.

Men’s Basketball Defeats MCCC

MAYS LANDING- The men’s basketball team defeated Montgomery County Community College (Pennsylvania) 86-82 in Region 19 action on Tuesday night.  

Trey Jones and Dafawn Toombs each had 19 points. Carmine Fiore added 18 for the Bucs, who are now 1-0.

The Bucs missed several three-pointers early in the game, and ultimately eschewed the outside game in favor of an up-tempo penetrating and passing game. 

Jones scored 11 points in the early minutes of the 2nd half and the Bucs built a 56-40 lead. 

Kevin Woods scored a game-high 26 for Montgomery.  Kevin Woods led a Mustang comeback to get Montgo within 5 points with 7 minutes remaining. Montgomery would stay close the rest of the game, narrowing the lead to just 1 with under 2 minutes to go. 

But the Bucs made key free throws and avoided turnovers to finally seal the game.

Middlesex Takes Two from Bucs

The Middlesex Mustangs took both games of the basketball doubleheader last night in GSAC basketball action.  Middlesex won the men's game handily 88-61.  The Mustangs led at halftime 37-25 and never trailed after the break.  Jaquan Pearyer had 25 points in the 2nd half and totaled 33 for the game for Middlesex (11-2).  Berruche Archille added 19 for the Mustangs.

The Bucs men have lost their last two games and are now 2-9 overall and 2-7 in the conference.  Dafawn Toombs had 22 for Atlantic Cape and Najee Wimbish had a career high 18 points.  Only four Bucs players scored points, and the lack of a balanced scoring attack has hurt this team all season.

The Atlantic Cape women had one of their best games of the season, but still fell short by a 91-80 score the the Colts.  Tuesday Cook scored a career high 17 points and Barb Gedeon also had a career high with 27 points.  "They couldn't hold Barb tonight", said Nairobi Hathaway.   Gedeon had 19 rebounds and Cook added 13 rebounds.  Selena Santiago continued to that she is one of the top players in the Region by scoring 21 for the Bucs and tallying 8 assists. 

Phoebe Carano's defensive play and hustle make the Bucs a better team.  Coach Quian Davis remarked that" Phoebe gives 100% every time she hits the court.  She's a great addition to our team."

Middlesex was led by Quorea Pearyer who had 37 points.  Alexandra Becker had 23 for Middlesex.

Head Coach Harold Harris is optimistic for the Bucs' chances the rest of this season; "we're not panicking, we're just getting started."

Barbara Gedeon (above) is developing into one of the top power forwards in Region 19.

Brookdale Rolls Past Atlantic Cape

The Brookdale Jersey Blues swept the basketball doubleheader last night in games played at Robert Collins Arena.  Brookdale's men's squad defeated the Bucs 94-67 behind Brian Crosby's double-double (19 points, 12 rebounds).  Isaiah Johnson had 20 for Brookdale. 

Brookdale won the women's game 80-61.  Marya Trapp had 25 points.  The Bucs had three players in double figures, led by Selena Santiago with 18 points.  Nairobi Hathaway added 17 and Phoebe Carano had 13, including 3 for 4 from 3-point range.  However, the rest of the squad could only combine for 13 points. 

Both teams are in action on Thursday night at Middlesex.  The women play at 5 pm, followed by the men's game at 7 pm.
