Uma of the northern/southern water tribe, daughter of the “sea witch” Ursula, it is unknown who her father is, but considering how powerful her bending is, along with being able to do things a normal human wouldn't be able to do, it is suggested he was the ocean spirit who turned human to for a while and courted Ursula, and soon disappeared and reunited with the moon spirit. ursula never knew who he truly was and tells Uma that he was just a man she met and dated for a while.
Uma was born small, but already her bending was powerful, at only a month old, she had caused a huge wave to crash and destroy a fish shop, no one knew she did it, they thought Ursula had caused it, the nasty witch. but Ursula knew and she punished Uma for it, resulting in Ursula hiding Uma for a week because of Uma gaining a black eye.
Uma was unable to learn the art of using waterbending to fight, as it was a rule in the tribe that women were forbidden to fight, they could only heal. so Uma had to go through 11 years of healing classes during the day, but during the night she stole scrolls and practiced her bending. one day she meets a pale tall lanky boy with an odd accent from the southern tribe, and is curious of him, and learns that his name is Harry and he is the son of the chief of the southern warriors. Uma asks what his father's name is and he replies that he doesn't know, but his mother's name is Maria and that she was the chief. Uma is surprised to learn of how different the southern tribe is from her tribe and quizzes him on it, him answering with pride.
Uma meets Harry's mother and accidentally shows her that Ursula had been abusing her for a long time, causing Maria to sneak Uma back with her to the southern tribe, but before they left, Uma made sure to grab her shell necklace and anything important to her, also sneaking into the spirit garden to say goodbye to the koi fish, not knowing why she did, she just felt guilty if she didn't.
Uma arrived at the southern tribe and was welcomed with open arms, and was soon placed into the advanced classes of bending and was soon called “master” Uma.
five years after Uma joined the tribe, a fire nation ship came crashing in, talking all known waterbenders, Maria tried to save them, but a man with a hook killed her and Harry screamed in anguish for his beloved mother and was knocked out by the man, Uma grieved for the woman that saved her from her mother. Harry and Uma were stuck in the ship's brig for two months, when one day, Uma learned something about herself....she could bend the water inside the body of a person...Uma could bloodbend. as she was already a powerful bender she did not need a full moon for her to be able to bend the blood of her guards.
she and Harry escaped that night, releasing the other water tribe prisoners and finding themselves in an earth nation colony, they ran into the forest and found a tall built blond boy, who was chucking rocks around. they learned his name was Gil.
