Prime Queen in Retrospect

So, I watched Audimatrix/Prime Queen again, and it was very enlightening to look back at it.

First, let us appreciate this wonderful shot of Tikki freaking out because Marinette is going to go on Nadja’s show and supposedly reveal all of her secrets on national television, putting everyone in jeopardy.

Second, let us appreciate that nice detail of the sun coming in through the window and the shadows of Marinette’s ladder in the background. That’s such a nice touch! I always love the little details like that that the animators include. Things like light and reflections are fascinating to me, and I always appreciate that level of attention to detail. uwu

I also have a new appreciation for Adrien’s love of baked goods. The poor boy arrives on set and promptly begins to devour all of the snacks like he hasn’t been fed that day. They show the snacks being wheeled away later, and Chat wistfully watches them go, stuffing one last chouquette in his mouth. #Adrien/Food

One thing I didn’t notice before was that Marinette goes downstairs and transforms in the hallway...but then it looks like she exits as Ladybug through her attic? Maybe she went out a side window and yoyo-ed up to her balcony, but this shot makes it look like, after transforming in the stairwell, she goes back upstairs as Ladybug and exits through her room...where Alya and Manon currently are. ^.^;

So, above is their reaction to Nadja showing them the kiss in Dislocoeur. Chat clearly had no idea that this happened, and I was not happy that Ladybug hadn’t pulled him aside and talked to him about it. Like...seriously? Not telling him wasn’t okay, and I think this episode really coloured my characterization of Ladybug in my 2019 works. It had a big impact on how I understood her character.

I also thought she was kind of mean to Chat about his feelings for her. On one hand, I totally understand where she’s coming from. She’s trying to be professional and save Paris, and her partner is (she thinks) goofing off and flirting with her on the job again. At this point, I thought she KNEW how he felt about her. I thought she knew he was serious about her but she was still being cold in the way she turned him down.

Apparently, according to the production order numbers, Glaciator comes right after this episode, and that’s when Marinette finds out that Chat is serious about Ladybug. I don’t know about you guys, but I saw Audimatrix third and Glaciator twelfth or thirteenth several months apart. I wonder if my experience of Audimatrix would have been softened if the episodes were released in production order and I had seen Glaciator the day after Audimatrix (because they were releasing the episodes back to back for a whole week at first when Season Two was coming out).

So, yeah. I had this whole misconception of the situation because I thought that Ladybug knew Chat was in love with her. Looking back at this, my perspective is a lot different.

But it was still wrong of her not to tell him about the kiss.

Moving on!

I want Nadja’s necklace. I don’t normally where yellow gold jewelry, but this is really pretty.

I can also appreciate this scene on the roof of the television studio where Ladybug is frustrated at how invasive Nadja’s questions were when Ladybug was just there to show Paris that they can have confidence in Ladybug and Chat Noir to protect them.

I like how Chat tells her that that’s just what it’s like to be a star. I missed how used to this he is because he’s experienced it as Adrien before, and that was just a little detail that I noticed and liked this time around.

Also, shoutout to when the train suddenly stops, Ladybug goes flying into Chat, and Chat purrs. That’s still such a classic scene, and I love it. XD

I see a lot of posts about Chadrien’s appreciation of croissants and/or macarons (myself included for the latter tbh, passion fruit ftw), but why does no one ever seem to talk about the fact he loves chouquettes?

Which akuma is the situation that is your favorite? Either by laughing, or concept, or even just the actions they took?

Dark Owl was rather funny and surprisingly effective. Audimatrix and Riposte seemed the most hell bent on murder—it was a bit of a shock.

Volpina was also close to yielding the miraculous, I thought the technique of gaining their trust and betrayal was super interesting and different than the usual approach. I hope akumas become more unconventional in the future.

Can I talk a bit about Arlette from the Audimatrix episode? Or rather how the ML production team were creative with how they directed/filmed her sequences?

The thing with Arlette is she was a one-time character (sorry to anyone theorizing she is Chloé’s mom). The episode needed a character to put pressure on Nadja during her interview with LB and CN and that’s it. All this Arlette character needed to be was to be be intimidating, patronizing, unreachable. 

They didn’t need to create another model because they could take one from their background characters bank (which they did)...

FYI this screenshot is from Season 1 Jackady (Simon Says) episode 

... and set her in the dark control room and play with the angle shots...

... in order to give a generic model the intimidating vibe they needed for the character along with good lines and acting to deliver those. 

Budget limitation can be an hassle but with a solid knowledge of your art, other people’s expertise in the domain and a touch of creativity, you can find solutions that can serve the story while also being cost-effective.
