welcome to @thelediz’s masterful character study that takes the Hazbin’s potential for mismanagement seriously, and doesn’t let a single character come out the other side unscathed. even more impressive than that is the fact that this fic, despite being written before we knew anything substantive about S2, remains not just consistent with canon (barring perhaps two lines? see if you can spot them!) but relevant to canon. there isn’t a single day I don’t think about this fic’s plot threads.

This is a bit of an odd content warning, but (even though it predates it) this fic has big TADC Episode 6 vibes. Characters are going to make bad decisions, and we’re going to fully explore the consequences of those decisions — it’s also going to happen to characters you might not expect given the premise. Your blorbos are going to be assholes to each other and no one is going to hold their hand about it. Sometimes a content warning is actually like shaking a bag of treats in front of your pets.

More importantly: this one has more ableist language than normal. Every character who uses the ableist language is doing it to be a cunt and not because they’re right, but they say it anyway.

I haven’t said much about this before, but acting is actually a really turbulent subject for me. I trained as a theatre actor for eight years — I was enrolled in a dedicated professional development program for the arts in high school and began a BFA in theatre performance immediately after graduating. I was intending for this to be my career.

One of my professors did something sexually inappropriate not just to me, but in front of the entire class. And it didn’t cause, but certainly accelerated my growing frustration with the field and the way it treated me and my peers as artists. I was depressed and suicidal when I quit, emotionally dysregulated and still years away from getting a diagnosis, and that trauma followed me like a spectre in every aspect of my life — one of my primary concerns with therapy as an institution is that it uses acting techniques. And when my therapists would tell me to be aware of my body and the way it was moving, I’d think of my professor’s penis.

I still practiced acting skills regularly even once I abandoned my career and pivoted to academia: presentations are the easiest thing in the world if you’re used to memorising two-hour long scripts, and you know I’ve always aced my Shakespeare classes. But whenever I would record myself reading my own writing out loud, something I’ve done for years and I always tell students to do, that disquieting feeling of being watched and evaluated and paralysed by imperfection still seized me up and made recording feel uncomfortable.

Recording podfics has been a really healing process for me. It’s distilled only the parts of acting that I remain really in love with, and kept away all of the things that made me hate my work — the hierarchy, the peer pressure, the labour, the objectification. It’s just me, art I love, and work I love doing, and none of the horrible expectations that made me quit. And it hit me, that when I was young and just starting my training, having listened to audiobooks since I was very small and continuing to do so well into adulthood, that this is what I’ve always wanted to do with my life. From when I first started acting to when I had to abandon it, narrating audiobooks was always one of my primary goals. Combine that with the fact that I’m finally teaching now, I’m fulfilling a lot of dreams that I had always been actively nursing. I’ve been wanting to live this life since I was young, and I’ve survived the pandemic, I’ve survived my prior suicidiality, I’m medicated, I’m trans; I have the career I always wanted to have, and I’m making the art I always wanted to make.

The incredibly talented and always wonderful authors I work with —@birdsaretoddlers, @soot-and-salt, and @cringefailvox particularly — tend to flutter when I ask their permission to record their work, and often say “this means a lot to me”. It means a lot to me, too, to have your work help me heal a part of myself that’s been hurt so deeply, and to produce something because I want to, because I love it, and because it’s fun. It’s an honour to work with you, and a greater honour to befriend the people who made the scripts that have made me this happy. I’m overjoyed to have you in my life, and I hope that you’ll get to stay in it for many years to come.

Does anyone else want audio recordings of WLW fanfiction?? Like give me some SuperCorp fluff while I’m hiking up a mountain and a little Clexa angst while I do my squats. Is that too much to ask?

Anyway, now I’m thinking about starting a podcast to read them to my fellow WLW! Thoughts? Feelings?

So I'm a big big big proponent of accessibility, both on the internet and off it, and I'm also a writer (psst: feel free to check out my fics on AO3). It's been a concern for me that not everyone can enjoy fics, whether that's because of dyslexia or related things, eyes that are sensitive to screens/vision issues, a shorter attention span, a dislike for reading, or anything else. And this makes me unhappy! Fandom has had such a transformative influence on my life, and I want everyone who's interested to be able to enjoy all sorts of fanworks. So I did some research, and I found out about podfics--essentially audiobook versions of fanfiction.

And then, my friends, I got *sparkles* inspired. I've got a versatile voice. I've got acting training. I love to read out loud and make up voices. Why shouldn't I extend myself to another area and not just write fics, not just enjoy them, but read them for others? It would be helpful. It would be fun. And I could help make fandom a more accessible place.

No! No, no, no! my severe anxiety screams. You aren't good enough! You'll sound weird! No one will want to listen to you! It might be dangerous! Don't do that! It'll end badly! No no no no no no!

So, in light of this, would anybody potentially have interest in listening to me read? Does anyone who's done podfics before have tips or advice? Anybody just wanna say something to me about this? I just don't want to be alone with my creeping anxiety anymore.
