Description: Price can't believe his life, even as he watches Nikolai read their toddler a bedtime story.
Day 6.1;
@fluffyjuly; Reading out Loud | “Just one more time”
Ao3 or under the cut
Post mission paperwork has Price in his office until eight. He looks at a photo on his desk. A photo reminding him of the life changes that has happened. Paperwork is finally complete. Price leaves the room and the main building.
The captain passes the barracks he used to frequent nightly. Now his walk is a little longer as he goes to the building for family housing. As he walks, he thinks of that discussion. One of many discussions he had with Nikolai and Kate Laswell. He knew she’d be supportive. He knew all his friends would be supportive, as they are with his relationship with Nikolai. Two years flew by quick.
Only one light is on in the townhouse as Price approaches the building. He knows that room. His daughter Jamie’s room.
Price unlocks the door, enters the apartment, turns on the light and heads upstairs.
As Price gets to the top of the stairs, he hears Nikolai’s voice. His lips form a smile. He still can’t believe Nikolai is reading bedtime stories out loud.
Price stands in the doorway, still unable to believe they have a toddler.
“Again! Again!” Jamie demands.
“I’ve read this five times already.”
“Just one more time.”
Price chuckles, giving away that he’s been watching.
“Daddy!”
“You stay in bed,” Nikolai demands, keeping Jamie in bed.
Price approaches the bed, seeing the book Jamie wants to hear Nikolai read again. The book he reads every night.
“You have other books. Does Papa really have to read Good Night Moon again?”
“Yes!”
“Она избалована.”
Price chuckles at Nikolai’s complaint.
“She is spoiled. At least we have others to blame besides ourselves for this.”
“Yes, Soap is the worst spoiling her. We told him often she doesn’t require a new toy each week.”
“At least five times. Glad Gaz and Ghost listen.”
Jamie yawns. The two fathers turn their attention to their daughter. Nikolai puts the book away while Price ticks her in. Both take turns kissing her and saying goodnight. They wait until she’s asleep before leaving the room. A night light is on, offering dim illumination in the darkness.
Hi Sulky, happy DADWC! For a prompt, for Anders/Fenris, may I submit from the Enemies to Lovers Prompts: “you’re not going to kill me.” “don’t be so sure about that.” “if you wanted me dead, i’d already be six feet under.”
happy Friday oh wittiest of syrups! have a slightly silly and very sideways interpretation of your prompt for @dadrunkwriting
"You have got to stop passing this filth out. Honestly, how do you even afford this much paper?" Aveline tossed a stack of paper in front of Varric as she stormed in.
He barely glanced at it before returning to his cards. "Not mine. Double or nothing, Rivaini."
"What are you packing under that chest hair, hmm?" Isabela teased, then tossed a handful of coins on the growing pile in the middle of the table.
Anders leaned back with a whistle and tossed his hand down. "Too rich for my blood; I'm out."
"Smartest thing you've said all week," Fenris muttered. "Fold."
"This is serious!" Aveline pounded her fist on the wood. "Someone has written abhorrent lies and I won't stand for it."
"So sit then?" Anders suggested. "Just like Guard Captain Levine did on Knight Commander Meribeth's f—"
"It's not funny!" she shouted.
He snorted. "It's a little funny. Would be better if the church was surrendering to the state, but suspension of disbelief only goes so far."
Bela groaned and tossed her cards in the air. "Three years, and not once have I criticized your manifesto. But if I sell a few --"
"A few!" Aveline pointed an accusing finger at the stack. "We confiscated dozens! Six were in the barracks! One had been slid under my door." She shook her head. "This is a disaster."
Varric picked up a sheet. "Oh, come now, Captain, no one can beleive this, it's just entertainment. " he squinted at it, then at Bela. "How do you know so much about her, er, her -"
Fenris snatched another one from the pile, then scowled and passed it to Anders. "Read it to me."
Anders had every intention of declining and handing to Merrill. He'd read it already, and just because he could take a punch to the jaw didn't mean he wanted one, especially from Aveline. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, one of the words caught his eye. Adler. Oh dear. He skimmed more carefully. Ferris. Oh no. His face warmed as he stammered, "I, I don't - this is - I think I, um, shouldn't."
Kirkwall was full of predators. He should know. He was sitting with several of them. Not predators like people, but predators like animals: deadly and dangerous if crossed. And even predators occasionally liked to play with their food when they smelled fear. All eyes focused on him, far too intently for comfort.
"Is that one different?" Merrill leaned over. "Oh, this one is about men. Isabela, you're so clever!"
She stretched out her legs to prop her boots on Varric's armrest and grinned like a mouse with an entire wheel of cheese. "I am, aren't I? Well, go on, then: read it like Fenris asked."
How did she know? Anders cleared his throat. "I'm not really a --"
"Read it," Aveline growled.
"Ferris grabbed Adler's collar and slammed him against the door.
"'You are reprehensible,' he hissed. 'I should kill you.'
"'Adler hooked his ankle around Ferris' leg. 'You haven't yet, you won't today.' Their eyes met, smoldering with --"
Anders swallowed. Why was Fenris just letting this happen?
"With, um, with, forbidden passion.
"'And you're so certain of that, master?' he growled as he tightened his grip. 'Certain you're not at my mercy?'
"Adler smiled. 'Oh, I know I am. But I like it that way, and so…' he shifted his hips for emphasis 'Do you. There'd be nothing left for a funeral if you wanted me --'
"Their lips crashed together, hungry and angry, then Ferris threw Adler to the floor. 'Show me what a generous master you —'"
The page burst into flames, and he dropped it with a yelp, too surprised to dowse it with magic. The ashes fluttered to the floor in thunderous silence. Even the noise in the common room below seemed muted.
No one spoke, not that Anders would be able to hear a damn thing over the blood pounding in his ears. He stared at his boots and prayed it was all a terrible dream, but no, this had far too few corpses to be one of his nightmares. Fenris’ gauntlets creaked with menace. Suppose that might change.
And still no one said a word. Merrill coughed twice. Aveline's armor jingled as she shifted from one foot to the other. Maker, why didn't he stop me?
"You should've added more Tevene. For… authenticity." Fenris’ voice was pleasant, maybe even amused, but his face was expressionless as he sipped his wine. "How much money did you make?"
Isabela shrugged. "Not much; maybe ten sovereigns all told."
He stood and placed a terrifyingly gentle hand on Anders' shoulder. "I expect to hear by tomorrow morning that twice that was donated to the clinic. We, however, are leaving."
What else could he do? Anders stumbled out to the back alley before turning to face certain doom. "Fenris, I swear I didn't say any--"
Just like in Bela's stupid story, Fenris’ lips crashed into his. Hands tangled in his hair as he was pinned between wall and elf, and he had no idea which was more unyielding. After all the effort they'd put into keeping things quiet, it made no sense to be making out in public, but Maker, his lips were so soft and tasted like honeyed wine and lyrium and—
"I gave her the idea," he murmured.
Anders jerked back in surprise, nearly cracking his skull on the bricks behind him. "You what? Why? How?"
"Careful, mage," Fenris chided, and cupped the back of his head gently to pull him closer for yet another kiss. "I confess, I wasn't expecting quite this much of an effect, or so soon, but I am not disappointed. You should read to me more often."
I've died. This isn't the Fade, but the afterlife. "Things like… that?" he ventured.
It was like Fenris hadn't even heard him. "Come back to the mansion tonight." He chuckled darkly. "And you can show me the depths of 'Adler's' generosity by reading the rest. While sitting in my lap."
"I'd uh, love to but the only copy, uh, burned. You were there."
"Bah," Fenris growled. "We'll buy another one. Or enact our own version."
I just finished reading Gideon the Ninth out loud to my spouse, which was a great deal of fun. I was explaining that the books get increasingly weirder, partially because of one of my favorite aspects of the books.
Namely, as I said to my spouse, if the characters don’t know shit, you don’t know shit, and the characters never know shit.
The lack of anything remotely approaching a reliable narrator is also part of the appeal.
Perhaps you could roughly translate this into Read-out-loud-Day or something like Day of reading out loud.
And I'm reading today live the beginning of my children's book "The Adventures of Anakos Trippelklemm" (this name I can't really translate, it's a mix of german words combined in different syllables: Ananas + Kokosnuss = Anakos and trippeln + Klemme = Trippelklemm.)
I plan to publish 2 books about this cute introverted hermit crab in search for friends and purpose next year. Did I mention there will be a small bit of romantic interspecies love?
Perhaps I should make another account for my original writing.🫣😅
I do voices when I read. But with how stuffed up I am (and probably with my growing vocal chords and lack of recent practice reading the Heroes of Olympus series), I'm struggling with getting unique voices for all the characters. I'm still trying to work on my voice for Leo. I know I had a good feel for reading with his voice years ago, but that was years ago now.
And I'm also trying to get my voices for piper and annabeth and rachel and stuff to sound different. Being male (with a males vocal chords), it's always been hard for me to do female characters voices. I wish it were a little easier, honestly.
Content Warning: All the horrible stuff. Genocide. White Supremacy. everything. This is the USA's history
It is a big holiday in the USA. And I have mix feelings and options on this holiday, but mostly on the country that is the United States of America. I think by reading Chapter 4 of Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States will hopefully illuminate that. I find it hard to be an "Proud America" with this history. I will game after the reading. And I am trying to raise money to reduce my credit card debt. Come and join me.
