Sad news reached the Canfield family in the late summer. Ellis I had peacefully departed in his sleep.

It wasn’t entirely unexpected. His health had been slowly degenerating over the past year and Charlie took over most work on the farm in the meantime. Though none of that lightened the pain, for they had still lost one of their most valued family members.

Now Ellis Jr. was a Sr., and it felt strange to say the least. Something of a weight was pushed from his father’s shoulders onto his own: he was the eldest man of the family now.

Goodbye, Ellis. You will be missed.

The last time I posted about August was so long ago! Here he is again, with his wife and children :) they still live in Windenburg, so his children see their grandparents a lot more than Ellis III and Elsie do.

He's a thief in the night... literally. After he left boarding school and didn't want to tell his parents, he had to find a way to make a living. Working as a servant didn't seem such an attractive prospect to him, and any other job he could find at his age wasn't going to pay rent and food. It left him with one obvious alternative: crime. It started with pickpocketing and stealing food, but he soon got more involved in the criminal scene and made a proper career out of it now. He does a lot of burglaries and has great connections on the black market.

His wife and children are a lot less well-off than he likes to tell himself, mostly because he likes to spend money in the pub – while it really should be used to buy some more food or new clothes for the little ones.

He always has a tune stuck in his head. He likes it one moment, but finds it maddening another. Whenever he's not surrounded by people (or engaged in an illegal activity), you can find him humming along to it.

A mate taught him to tap dance, and he's not bad at it now. Not that he'd ever openly confess it, though.

August is in for a lot more fun than you'd initially expect him to be. He can come off as a bit reserved at first, but it's out of pure carefulness. He can't just trust anyone, but once he does, he'll want to enjoy himself. (By tap dancing, for instance.)

The boys came over for a visit! It appears that Charlie is doing a lot better lately, and August has managed to get used to boarding school perfectly. Even though he does miss home a lot; he was on the verge of tears when his brother opened the door.

Only Will still seems a bit off... though come to think of it, most of his family members have known him like that for most of his life now. Perhaps that’s just how Will is now. Still, Ellis Jr. agrees with his mother on the fact that it’s a bit strange, and they agreed to get to the bottom of it. Ellis Sr. decided it was just a phase or something.

The twins got along as if they hadn’t been separated for even a day. August complained about some things in school, while Florence laughed at the funny faces he made.

The twins aged up! They’re spending their last day together before August is headed off to boarding school. Florence will stay at home to help with chores and will instead attend the local public school.

While the rest of the family is still in mourning, the twins are (thankfully) less affected by the whole ordeal. Florence misses her sister, but still has no real understanding of death yet. August is just having fun like he always did.

Finally, Ellis Sr. and Julia are beginning to find happiness again. Their pain will never truly pass, but they’re slowly learning to live with it. With Ellis Jr. soon being a teen, their eldest set of twins getting good grades in boarding school, and both of their toddlers soon to age up into children, there is enough to be happy about, too.
