#OnThisDay in 1895, brothers Louis and Auguste Lumière screened a series of short scenes from everyday French life at the Grand Cafe in Paris and charged admission. This is believed to be the world’s first commercial movie screening.

The first public screening of a commercial film was on 28 December 1895 in Paris. About 40 paying customers witnessed the "birth of cinema" presented by Auguste and Louis Lumière, who showed a dozen short films (each about a minute in length).

The Lumières went on tour with their films in 1896, traveling to Brussels, London, Montreal, New York City, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Cairo, and Bombay.
