Aurora.
Blood. So much of it.
A bloody baby was screaming in Severus’s lap. The blood— well, at least it didn't come from the baby.
Severus had no idea what was happening. At first, he came up to the astronomy tower to… succeed in whatever he was trying to do. Yet somehow, despite nearly hacking his own limbs off, a baby was here. In his lap.
How did he get this baby?
It's not like he intended to make a child— creating a child then abandoning it would've been worse than actually dying.
Why does he have a baby?
Last he checked, he's nothing out of the ordinary. Slightly more magically gifted, yes, but… something like this?
Is this baby even human?
Severus didn't even have time to think about that before his vision went dark, just as he heard Minerva screaming.

When he awoke, he was in St. Mungo's. Both of his arms were heavily bandaged, and perhaps the other parts too. Merlin, he can't even remember what caused him to try and end it all.
Minerva was there. She looked worried.
“You scared us all half to death, Severus.” She tried to speak in a calmer voice. “You almost…”
Albus came in just as she was talking. “Severus, my boy! Glad to see you awake! How are you feeling?” He said, sounding far too happy. Then again, he’s an old man.
Severus tried to sit up, but Minerva immediately pushed him down. “Like shit.” He replied. “I’ve lost more blood than I thought.”
“Yes, well… some of it went to her.” Said Minerva, her tone… softening?“...What do you mean by her?”
“You don't remember?” Albus was the one to ask him, rhetorically. “Out of your own blood and magic, a child came through, Severus!” He said. Severus never had one, but he thinks Albus already sounds like grandpa of the year.Truth be told, he thought he was hallucinating the baby. “It… wasn't a dream?” He asked, confused. He had just woken up, and he wasn't even sure if he was fully awake. “There really is a…”
“It's a girl. The nurses came to check on her.” Said Minerva. “Honestly, how did it happen?”Neither of them could even think of an answer to that question. “I… don't know. Is it— is she even a human?”
“Well, seeing as… we can't just kill her!” Minerva raised her voice slightly. “The baby is technically a curse.” Said Dumbledore, not unkindly. There was a twinkle in his eyes. “But, after careful examination, she's perfectly healthy and normal.”
“I could not have made that. Impossible.” Hissed Severus. “I'm barely able to take care of a handful of first years and you expect me to handle an infant? I failed to die so now my punishment is to take care of something?”
“Unfortunately, it seems so.” Said Dumbledore. “If the child was a normal case, we could have made arrangements for adoption, but the circumstances here are… strange.”
“Oh great, it's attached to me and I can't cut the invisible umbilical cord.”
“I would think it's a good thing.” Cut in Minerva.
“What?!” Exasperated Severus. “How is taking care of a baby—”
“Whether you like it or not, she's going to be stuck with you for life, Severus.” Minerva said in her strict professor tone. “I’m not saying this is punishment for trying to take your own life, but rather…”
“A second chance.”

“Second chance, my arse.” Severus mumbled under his breath as he rocked the crying baby back and forth. He was discharged last week, and he had to bring home the baby. He was already so busy that hadn't even named her yet.
He tried everything already— food, a toy, a diaper change (that Minerva was kind enough to teach him how to do), yet she was still crying.
“Some babies tend to cry for no reason,” Minerva explained, “so just keep rocking and bouncing them until they stop.”
He’d been at this for an hour, and it was already two in the morning! He was awfully lucky it was summer break at Hogwarts, otherwise he’d have gone crazy already.
After another hour, the baby had finally fallen asleep. Severus put her down on the crib, and sighed. This wasn't how he imagined his life to go.
He didn't imagine being a spy, a professor, a father, and above all else he didn't imagine living past his twenty-first birthday, either. He didn't imagine outliving...
Thinking about it makes him want to end it all again, and this time, he'd succeed. No more magical babies would come from him. He would just be dead. This baby would have to find a better place.
A proper family. Hopefully magical. A mum, a dad, some siblings maybe. They wouldn't live in this dump of a house like Spinner's End.
The baby would have a better life without him. Clearly. He'a not exactly what anyone would call father material. He's not even teacher material!
The baby honestly feels more of a chore rather than a second chance.
Wait, what?
He can't think that. That's horrible. He made so many promises he wasn't going to turn into his father. This baby doesn't deserve that. She didn't ask to be here.
So far, he's done an okay job. He hasn't lost his tempter at all. That's a start. At least he knows this kid is magical— I mean, she has to be, considering she was literally made of magic.
Severus stared at the baby in her crib, hugging an old toy in her sleep. She looked so... peaceful... and she looked so much like him.
Staring at it made his heart ache.
She doesn't deserve any of this.

A month passed, and he still hasn't found a name for her.
He did try to think of something. Anything. Flower names were out of the question.
He asked Minerva, though none of her suggestions really clicked. ("No, Minerva, I am not naming her after you."/"Hmph. Fine. Suit yourself.")
From Lucius and Narcissa... well, Severus wasn't planning on having her join the Malfoy naming tradition of constellations.
He didn't even consider going to Albus. Not with a name as long as 'Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore'— honestly, what were his own parents thinking...?
Anyhow.
The baby needed a name. A fine one, something that— for lack of a better phrase— "fits" his aesthetic. Something elegant.
Baby girls are usually their parents princesses, aren't they?
With the baby asleep within reach, he dug through his closet, he found a few books Charity had given him from when they were students at Hogwarts. She hasn't asked for them back in years...
It was a book meant for kids (and Severus should really purchase more for the baby soon). It was just some Disney princesses. He remembers all the times he and Lily would watch those muggle films in their house. If Tobias even found out about that, he might've killed Severus.
One chapter caught his eye.
[...] A daughter was born, and they called her Aurora. Yes, they named her after the dawn for she filled their lives with sunshine. [...]
It was a line from Sleeping Beauty, directly from the movie. That memory's bittersweet now. It was the first ever movie Severus had seen with Lily.
He turned to look at the baby, still asleep.
"Aurora seems fitting, doesn't it?" Severus mumbled more to himself than at the baby. She hardly stirred awake.
She looked so peaceful.
Severus couldn't help but smile. The baby stirred awake, yet didn't cry.
"Aurora it is." He said, picking her up. "Your name is Aurora."
The baby Aurora smiled.

Years passed, and Aurora was already in Hogwarts. A first year. Time really does fly as a parent, he should've heeded Minerva's (and Narcissa's) advice much sooner.
He could've sworn he was just helping Aurora walk yesterday. Now she can walk, and talk (back), and more.
He can't even fathom she'd be graduating in a blink of an eye.
He's certainly a lucky parent, teaching in the same school his child goes to. He'll always be there watch her grow up.
He's vowed time and time again he would do whatever it takes to keep his only daughter safe.
No harm will ever go her way for as long as he's alive.
severus complains about aurora being "too pink" (she's got pink hair ribbons, a pink bracelet, a pink bag charm, and even pink accessories on her school shoes) and then dolores umbridge comes along and suddenly aurora isn't as pink as he thought it was
Severus before Aurora's first year: Remember, Ayang, I'm going to be your teacher in Hogwarts, which means I'm not going to be there to parent you all the time. I'm acting as your teacher there, and whatever you do, don't mess up and stay out of trouble. Got it?
Aurora: Okay!
