A friend recently tagged me on Facebook to post some songs from the ’90s that were somehow significant to me. Since I have not been very active on here for the better part of a year, I’ve decided to repost a few of my responses, both for the sake of content, and – why not? – posterity.
_____________
For my first response, I’m going to cheat. ‘Streets of Your Town’ was released both as a single and on The Go-Betweens’ album 16 Lovers Lane in 1988, at which pass I was still playing with My Little Ponies and my Mickey Mouse radio as a moon-faced boy of four. The song first registered with me in high-school around the turn of the millennium, when Prime Television employed it as their theme song—a vaguely unsettling choice, given what seemed to my teenage ears to be the lyric’s apparent undertones of stalking: ‘Everyday I make my way / through the streets of your town’. Overlaying video footage of children playing in worn out parks and scuttling across the bitumen of eucalypt-lined streets, it just felt creepy. A friend and I even jokingly called it “the stalker song”. What a shock, then, to realise a few years later, once The Go-Betweens had finally made their long overdue impression on me and my listening habits, that its melodic beauty – which so effortlessly evokes the long, aimless summer afternoons of the Australian suburbs which, in my childhood, at least, seemed to unfold as if outside of all time (this to my general despair and frustration, being an ‘indoors’ kid in a coastal town that vaunted sports and beach culture above all else); the same afternoons, with their attendant counsel from parents and teachers that we would someday look back on these as ‘the best days of our lives’, that the TV spot hoped to capture – did in fact belie a subversive intent: ‘Watch the butcher shine his knives / and this town is full of battered wives’. A song calling bullshit on its own sense of nostalgia—and, by extension, the listeners’. Nevermind that this gentle sentimentality surely went a long way to accounting for its popular success. (Robert Forster has recalled the band hearing their biggest chart hit ‘on the radio, [in] every jean shop and café’ as they wandered around Soho in the UK summer of 1989, when the newly re-released single was picked up on high rotation by BBC Radio 1.) A curtain had been drawn back, and what it exposed was both shocking and ugly. Needless to say, they didn’t keep that line in the Prime ad.

The Temper Trap / Sweet Disposition
