nancy and el are, and have been for a while, being deliberately misunderstood by large sections of the st fandom because acknowledging both their roles in the show and their actual characterizations mean understanding that the male characters people put on a pedestal aren’t actually as important or as interesting as they want them to be. and i do think it’s intentional because the way they’re mischaracterized constantly is so far removed from the actual content of the show that it’s impossible to get to unless it’s being done on purpose. in my opinion.

so much of the st fandom at this point is talking about a show that is completely divorced from the plot, characters, and dynamics of the actual show. like it’s beyond just normal changes for fanon it’s now an entirely different show with the names stolen from stranger things. and i guess technically there’s nothing wrong with that in terms of fics that are acknowledged as being out of character or reinterpreted or whatever, but when people start treating things that go entirely against what actually happened in the show as real is when we get whatever mischaracterization nightmare is going on now

also way too much of the st fandom is focused on the male characters that they’ve completely forget that the three most important characters on the show, in terms of the plot throughout all four seasons are women (el, joyce, nancy). obviously im not gonna sit here and tell people what chatacters they can and can’t like or whatever but when the actual main characters on the show are being pushed aside for side characters and people that do fuck all, it’s just really fucking frustrating because it’s not even just those characters being ignored. it’s constant ableism against el and misogyny against nancy and forcing their entire characters to be centered around men when in reality the male characters are existing to further their plots instead of the other way around.

in conclusion. i think the st fandom needs to actually think about the women in the show sometimes (or all the time) instead of the men
