“Is that how you want to be?” She tilts her head, one eyebrow lifting in question.

“Yeah that’s how I’m going to be.”

“Last chance honey. I don’t want to hurt you, but I will.” Her tone is sharp. You have pushed her to the edge, to her breaking point. But you just don’t seem to know when to stop.

“Yeah right, you’re just all talk.” No sooner are the words out of your mouth are you pushed up against the wall, her hand around your neck pining you to the wall. She squeezes, limiting your air supply.

“You think you can talk to me like that?” She snarls. Her head dips down, lips next to your ear. She’s so close you can feel her breath ghosting over your skin.

Those demons, however, made you go back to old methods of sedation.

Drink, to be specific.

You knew your brain was lying. It was one thing that brought you all together, what your individual minds told you.

Yet, you still buried yours. Despite how open you had all become about mental health - even forcing Val to give you mental health days - you still hid yours.

Old ways and all that.

It was Bucky who found the stash of cans and bottles under your bed.

What hurt him, wasn't the fact that you hid them - he didn't blame you for that at all - no, it was instead the fact that you thought they'd judge you for it.

Walker entered the room, seeing it open, his eyebrows furrowing at why Bucky was there.

Bucky held up a can.

Walker sighed, "Damn. How many?"

"About a dozen."

He ran a hand down his face, "shit."

"Shit," Bucky echoed.

"So, what do we do?"

Bucky paused for a moment, not entirely used to Walker not having some sort of plan.

"Clean up first, then go from there."

Walker nodded, going into mission mode already, "I'll get the bag."

“Hey,” he called out, “we don’t judge them for this, ok?”

“No matter how many downs,” John said, “that’s the promise we made each other when we saved Bob.”

Bucky nodded.

Yelena's phone went off. You were having one of the mandated mental health days. Just you and her, the others all doing their own thing.

She looked at it, before her eyes then went to you.

You finished buying the food you'd gotten from the shop you were in, before turning to her.

"What?" you asked, softly.

She shook her head, "nothing," she assured, "you have everything you need?"

You nodded, "yup. Even something for Alexei," you said, holding up a vodka bottle.

She rolled her eyes, not too insulted, "really?" her accent really came through.

"He's like a walking stereotype. Has the dad who's genuinley trying, though."

She softed, "he is. That's true."

You continued walking on, Yelena astonished that no one recognised either of you in your more civilian wear.

It reminded her of what life could have been had…everything, not happened.

She then looked to you, seeing you have a similar haunted look in your eyes.

Bucky had thrown the last bag down the chute - one that Walker of all people believed you guys should have. His argument for it, “we’re on like the top floor, cleaners ain’t gonna want to come up here.”

It made things more efficient, he had to admit.

“What are you two up to? Ava asked, coming in from her mid morning stretch.

“Cleaning,” Bucky said.

“I can see, and smell, that. Lot of beer.”

“It’s not ours,” Walker sneered, as if expecting the hit from the jab that never came.

She looked to your room, door open still, she then sighed.

“We’ll hide the rest.”

Was it brash? Sure. But, they never did any one thing a half measure.

If hiding it would help, they’d hide it.

Yelena and you had found a bench. Birds chirped above you.

“I’m sorry about the last mission,” you said, “I wasn’t as focused as I should have been.”

Yelena looked to you. Progress, you were opening up.

Still, she pretended to play blind, “we all have our off days.”

You scoffed, looking up at the trees, at how peaceful everything seemed.

You hated the war that raged within you. You hated even more about your old habits —

“Hey,” she said, hand going into yours, “you’re here with me.”

“I know you know,” you said, ashamed, “could tell when you smelt my breath this morning.”

She kept her gaze soft, letting the worry be shown, “I know what it’s like to try drown your demons. It never works.”

Your eyes shimmered with tears, “then…then — why…why does it feel like the only way out?”

“In an odd way, it is a comfort,” she said, “before all of us coming together, I wasn’t lost. I drank myself to sleep every night.”

You squeezed her hand. Worry and solidarity all wrapped into one.

“We’re a mess.”

“We are,” she said, “but a setback doesn’t mean the end.”

“Wait, you’re helping” Bucky said in a sort of disbelief to Alexei helping lock some of the alcohol cabinets.

“While i would never deny a comrade drink,” he admitted, “I would do anything to keep the pain it can bring to a friend.”

You and Yelena had fallen silent, but she could tell the war going on inside of you, "I don't like that I slipped back."

She sighed, "we cannot help it. Somtimes our demons get too loud and we go backwards. Our journeys are never liner."

“We’re meant to be, though. We are meant to be something more.”

“Us as the New Avengers? Maybe in principle. But we are not like those who were…before us…we are something more damaged and who let that be known.”

You didn’t answer, but Yelena could see that the words had impacted you.

She felt her phone go off, it was Ava who had messaged.

She sighed, before showing you the photo of a locked cabinet stuffed with beer.

“Let us go make our friends undo this, yes?”

She could see the guild mix with a sense of warmth at what your friends had done.

After calming down at Ava’s apparent betrayal, the Thunderbolts sat in the main area. Would you be angry? Would it cause you to hide away more?

The ding of the elevator allowed for them to find out.

Yelena stepped out first, looking at her friends, “I’m giving them space.”

“We sure that’s a good idea?” John asked.

“They’re still hungover, and processing what you’ve done.”

“Say that like it’s a bad thing.”

“No,” she defended, “they’re overwhelmed by that choice being made.”

“Whenever I slipped,” Bob said, “I used to push people away. Guess it’s why it was so easy to become to agree to that…programme.”

“We just wanted to help, little Yelena,” her dad said softly.

“I think we have,” Ava said, “just in an overreaction, some might say.”

They heard footsteps, seeing you in more casual wear.

“I, um….thank you for…for trying. I haven’t really had anyone do that before.”

Bobs words ran true then.

Bucky go up. Approaching you, he put a hand on your shoulder, “no one is gonna leave you.”

“…then why does it feel like you will?”

“Because we are messed up people,” Ava said, “whose minds lie to us. Yours told you that we would leave you for a slip up — that you deserved that. You never did. You never do. You never will.”

“I didn’t mean to hide it.”

“You got creative,” John joked, “big building.”

You snorted.

“Can we ask why you drank?” Alexei asked.

“Nightmares. Old wounds. Fear of what’s coming with everything.”

It felt pathetic to admit, yet another hand was on your shoulder, Ava’s.

You gulped, tears rising.

Then a sob. You let yourself feel.

You didn’t know when the hug had started. You didn’t know how long it had lasted for or what exactly you said in sobs — but you knew one thing:

They didn’t let go.

A few days had gone by. The cabinets were unlocked again.

Bucky went by your room, seeing the door be open. You put a can in the bag. Only one this time.

He caught your eye and nodded — you nodded back, not entirely ashamed.

You weren’t perfect with it. You still which one after all. But it was a hell if a lot last than the last spiral.

Bucky held up a hand, disappearing for a moment before coming back with some water.

You took it, as he took the can from you.

“Thank you,” you said.

“No matter how many downs we have, right?”

You nodded, “no matter how many downs.”

You got that — at least for now. But you repaired, they’d repeat it. As many times as they needed to.

Yelena

She is an assassin, trained from childhood. A weapon to be used until she died and was no longer needed...but now what was she?

It was something she sometimes found difficult to give up, but now that her girlfriend was in her life, she had a family, a team, and her love seemed to be blossoming.

Her nightmares and memories were still there, but it was the days she spent with her love, whom she affectionately called oca, the Russian word for wasp, that mattered.

An insect that was an enemy of the black widow, but for Yelena, it was a blessing, because once in her life, the buzzing of the wasp seemed to drown out the memories.

“Maybe a day of relaxation would do you good? Or maybe a new suit...you know how good silver looks on you,” the blonde heard her friend say as she came over to get her out of the picture from her childhood. It was a habit. Yelena lost herself in the blood she had shed, and distraction and time together helped her get out of it.

The faint smile and the nod of agreement were a small sign before the rough hand rested on her friend's. “You mean how good you think silver looks on me?” Yelena replied questioningly and smiled as she let her girlfriend pull her away, already sensing how the past was just a memory and how tomorrow and their love lay right in front of her.

She had love and a family. She no longer had her sister, but she had something new, something that helped her find her place. Whether it was shopping for clothes or a new suit, even a new gun was a distraction with someone Yelena loved and cared about deeply, and she also learned to relax.

Accepting an ordinary day as just a day without a mission helped her deal with the pain and guilt. The kiss Yelena gave her was deep and short, her rough hand resting on the other's hip, a gesture of support and gratitude.

A gesture that expressed Yelena's love and a gesture that let them both know that the darkness had been left behind once again. It was painful and had to be allowed to happen, but together they would make it through.

Ava

An experiment, she knew nothing else, surrounded by doctors and nurses, by researchers who experimented on her and never cared about her. Not when she disappeared and reappeared, and not when she killed her way through the world as a ghost on a different plane in pursuit of something. A mission.

She had a mission to fulfill, nothing else. She had never had another beginning, never had that choice. She was an experiment and never had a choice until the moment she was brought into the Thunderbolts team and decided to stay...together with her love.

Another former experiment, “An experiment to which you gave a real life,” Ava heard often enough from her love when she saw the special suit that the brown-haired woman had developed so as not to lose her love.

After the incident in New York, the two of them also joined the team, and life was slow. Together, above all, they learned what it meant to stay, not to disappear and to show up. Ava and her learned what it meant to stick together, to cuddle up to each other at night.

“I'll never leave you,” Ava promised her partner and kissed her on the forehead. Something that hadn't been possible for a long time, but now it was, and they both regained their normalcy.

Either the two together or with Yelena and Antonia had a day full of fun, whether they were training for a battle or with weapons. They also tried art therapy, painting a picture for the tower, where they all did their best to show off their artistic talents.

It may have seemed childish and silly, but these were things Ava had never been able to do before with her friends and her love she was happy to be able to do them now.

Antonia

Her childhood was normal, as normal as it could be when you are the daughter of a human trafficker, drug lord, arms dealer, and simply one of the most dangerous criminals in the world.

He was the power behind the red room, and his daughter was his everything...at least that's what Antonia thought until the flames engulfed her and the girl was transformed from a traumatized child into a pure, emotionless, imitative weapon.

A weapon that should have died because it had failed in its mission. But instead, she had been given a second chance, and now she would be able to set everything right and finally find closure after one last mission. “I'll finish it for us,” the Russian woman said as she opened her helmet and looked into the compassionate eyes of her lover.

A former black widow, her training partner from the beginning, two women who had suffered so much that it didn't matter what they did, they would never escape their past.

They didn't have to, because when her friend's cool hand rested on the burned part of her face, Antonia closed her eyes.

For just a moment, everything seemed fine, and it was, when she was with her loved one.

They trained together, watched over each other, perfected what they were good at until they both sat quietly next to each other, holding hands, trying to get used to the little bit of normality without being overtaken by the past.

Learning to be normal, what it meant not to be on a mission and just to live, a life without weapons and fashion, without being covered in blood.

It was the most difficult mission they both had to master, but they would succeed as long as they were together.

“You are my most important mission...I won't leave you behind,” Taskmaster said as the helmet closed and the other faced the dangerous assassin, but all she saw was Antonia on her last mission, and they would finally make a new start together and get the life they both deserved.

Imagine waking up in some new place, no idea where you are or how you got here but you figure it probably has something to do with the hell you've been through in the last few months.

Pissed and terrified, you get up and wander sound the long-abandoned town in an attempt to find someone or something usefull. Like your phone, which is missing.

And you just can't lose the feeling you're being watched.

See, it'd be real easy for Ava to just kill you right then and there. Alone, clueless. But she doesn't, for some reason. She's unsure why.

So if she's not gonna kill you yet, she decides to go ahead and say hello. Besides, a little human interaction is nice once in a while, isn't it?

Unfortunately you two actually hit it off, you being none the wiser to her little "oh im so alone, 'm so scared" act. She takes you to one of the buildings, says you can set up camp until you guys "can figure out what's going on."

She gives you some of the things left behind by the others - a sleeping bag, some things to pass the time with, clothes. Tells you she just found them there - which worries you initially, but it's surprising how quick you'll let her calm you down. She didn't realize her presence was such a comfort, odd.

What's one night with a little friend? She can just get rid of you in the morning, enjoy the late night chats tonight.

Until its been a week, and now you're laying in her lap while she strokes your hair, a fuzzy sensation working at her gut. Goddamn it - you were gonna cause her a lot of fucking problems.
