A preview of the upcoming chapter of Sins of the Fathers:
"You know," Azula looked at Mai as her friend and now her sister by choice, said quietly, "I keep wondering how long our peace and this island's peace can last."
"I'm not being a pessimist," Mai's voice was level.
"There are only a few places that we could have fled to and the Fire Lord knows it. They had to know that when they took us in."
"I still don't want to think about it."
"It's not about what we want. It's about when, not if, this happens and who they'd send to do it."
Azula turned pale at the thought.
And then she rose to her feet and all but ran to talk to Suki and Oyaji.
Ty Lee looked over at them.
"What exactly did you say?"
Mai's face was as stone as ever as she answered truthfully.
"I asked a question that we've been evading."
"No," Ty Lee said, "I heard that part. They could exile us, you know."
"More than we already are? Ty Lee, we all committed treason rather than go along with Azulon's latest twisted brain fart."
Ty Lee guffawed at that description but it wasn't entirely wrong.
"The Fire Lord's not exactly the forgiving type, is he?"
And then she understood exactly why Azula ran to talk to them.
"Who do you think he'll send?"
"I suspect either the Murder Battalion or the Destruction Battalion. He knows about that exile community."
Ty Lee's face became as pale as Azula's.
Mai laughed softly and awkwardly as she looked around.
"This is a good place to die, isn't it?"
