For as long as anyone can remember, Maria Hill was Nick Fury’s second in command. She was a tough, no nonsense agent who didn’t let her gender stand in her way of an outstanding career. She was present during the destruction of the P.E.G.A.S.U.S research facility, just managing to avoid being crushed to death. Yet she took up her position as executive officer on the Helicarrier, helping to defend the bridge when a mind controlled Clint Barton boarded with commando assault soldiers. Maria proceeded to help coordinate further operations on the carrier, but there was little more that she could do with a crippled ship. She informed Nick Fury that a pilot went rogue and was going to bomb New York City. She last appeared on the Helicarrier with Nick Fury, agreeing that the Avengers would come back when they need to.
Maria was privy to many secrets S.H.I.E.L.D had, including the true nature of what happened to Phil Coulson after he died at the hands of Loki. She was also involved in Nick Fury’s plan to fake his death after being attacked by the Winter Soldier. However, she agreed with Captain Rogers that S.H.I.E.L.D needed to go in order to defeat HYDRA.
In the aftermath of the attack and obtaining a job at Stark Industries, the FBI apprehended Maria. She attempted to convince Coulson to try to make a deal with the government. Nevertheless, upon being informed that Grant Ward was a HYDRA double agent and was holding Skye captive, she assisted Coulson and his team escape Talbot. Together they tracked down Ward on the stolen Bus, and Maria kept him distracted while Coulson infiltrated the plane to rescue Skye. After everything was said and done, she attempted to get Coulson to see reason, but he refused to give up on S.H.I.E.L.D.
Maria eventually found out that a Skrull acted in her name. It pissed her off, but other trouble got her attention . Asked by Fury himself, she signed the SHPA to be able to work at the new reformed SHIELD. She is a high clearance agent, officially. Of course she is reporting back to Nick everything she discovers and finds not only about Osborn but also the new branches of SHIELD.
