“I know it’s for the best…” he said looking back up at Betty. “I’ve got the clean up, you can go work on getting packed up.” he said as he stood up and grabbed the plates from the table.
A couple hours later the space was cleaned up and they were packed and headed back to Archies place in Riverdale. They had finally powered both of their phones back up and marveled at the amount of missed calls and texts that had compiled over the past 24 hours. Betty went through them to make sure nothing urgent had happened while Archie drove. She sent out a few replies to select people letting them all know that both she and Archie were fine, that they just needed to unplug for a bit but there was nothing to worry about.
She spent a long time staring at a huge slew of texts from Veronica apologizing, and freaking out, and then switching to accusatory.
[Txt from V] I get it, you guys decided to take the low road and get back at us by hooking up. Is that why you aren’t answering me? I expect that kind of shit from Cheryl but never from you. I knew you never got over him picking me over you.
She bit her lip as she read it and fought with herself on what to say or if she even should respond at all to it. They pulled to a stop in front of Archies place and he looked over at her slightly concerned. He knew that look meant nothing good. He finally picked up his own phone and started to sort through his own messages.
“You’re welcome to stay here as long as you want...” he offered knowing that she didn’t have anywhere else to go for the time being. “I can sleep on the couch and you can take my bed, or we can fix up the garage a bit to be more comfortable.” He offered.
She knew she would have to face Ronnie eventually, even if it was just to get her things from the room at the Pembrooke. She managed a nod as she typed out a brief response.
[Txt to V] Nothing happened. Just needed space. I’ll get my stuff out today.
She hit send on the message and sighed as she looked over at Archie who was doing the same as she had just done. “I’ll still have to go get my stuff from her place later. Maybe we can avoid the most fire by me heading over there while you guys talk.” Betty suggested and as much as Archie didn’t want to see Veronica he knew it was for the best.
Betty looked across the street and saw Jug’s bike parked out front and felt a bit of a sting as she thought that Jug might also think that she and Archie had hooked up. She didn’t have much room to be mad at him since he was single, technically, but she was mad that it happened not only so fast but with her best friend, of all people. That helped ease her worries of anything he may be feeling or thinking may have happened.
As they were climbing out of the car and gathering up their things to take inside, as if he had been summoned, Jug appeared out the front door of the former Cooper residence. He looked somber, more so than normal as he walked to the sidewalk. Archie was almost visibly red in the face as he noticed Jug and took a couple steps as if to confront him before Betty intervened and managed to divert him to go inside.
She took a deep breath as she watched the door slam shut to Archies place and she turned to face Jug. Don’t cry, don’t cry, don’t cry. She repeated in her head over and over as she crossed the street over to where he stood. “Now may not be the best time to talk to him...” she said softly avoiding making eye contact and crossing her arms in front of her chest. She kept a safe distance from him which stung more than she expected it to. “... may not be the best time to talk to either of us really...” she said with a small sniffle as she saw flashes of what her mind had pieced together of images of him with Veronica.
“I know... I wouldn’t blame either of you for beating the crap out of me.” Jug said looking down at his feet then up at Archies place. “There’s nothing I can say that would make it okay.”
Her eyes shot to his face at the comment with one of her signature looks of disbelief. “Because it’s not... I know you know that but you do know that there is absolutely no scenario where it would be okay for you to hook up with your best friends girlfriend or your ex’s best friend not even a full 24 hours after the split...” she said before she could even catch herself. Her anger got the best of her. She sighed and looked away from him. “Sorry... I shouldn’t have said that.”
“No, you’re right. There is nothing okay about what happened. I have no excuse other than being a drunk idiot.” he said looking over at Archies place. “I really am sorry, Betty. I know you don’t want to hear it yet and I know I don’t in anyway deserve you to forgive me, but I mean it. If I’m honest I went there looking for you and... I had had a few... or a lot... Veronica was trying to comfort me and things just...” He stopped himself. “It was a mistake and I’m sorry you had to be put through this.” he said.
Betty stayed silent. He was right, she wasn’t ready to forgive him and she wasn’t going to. “I um... I better go check on Arch...” she said finally. “Just, give him some time... take care of yourself, Jug.” she said before turning and walking back across the street finally feeling a few tears escape her facade and roll down her cheeks. She wiped them away before making her way into the house and seeing Archie putting up the leftover snacks and food.
“You guys should talk eventually...” she said. “He’s fully expecting you to punch his lights out, and I think he feels like he deserves that and more.” she said knowing that the two would need to eventually confront this. They’d been friends even longer than Betty and Arch and she’d hate to see that stop because of the stupid acts that Jug really did feel bad about. Which meant she would eventually have to try and patch things up with Ronnie too. But that could wait.
“I’ll give him more if that’s what he wants...” Archie muttered though some part of him knew that he didn’t really want to hurt Jughead, much. He took a breath and stopped for a moment as he looked at his phone that had just buzzed again. Betty’s own phone buzzed and she checked it to see a text from Veronica. She was apologizing for saying what she had and asking to talk.
[Txt to V] Eventually. Not today. I don’t want to fight. Let me cool down.
She hit send on the message and looked up at Archie. “You going to talk to Veronica tonight or do you need more time?” she asked thinking she would swing over to the Pembrooke while they talked.
“I think i have to do this tonight. I don’t want to be that guy that just ghosts, but I can’t be her boyfriend right now.” she sighed. “I’ll meet her somewhere soon and then be back here and we can drown ourselves in junk food and movies again.” he tried to sound positive.
“We’ll get through this Arch, I know it all is crazy now, but it will work out somehow.” she offered him a very slight smile.
“I’m going to go get my stuff from Veronica’s while you guys talk, and maybe get us some more healthy snacks. You need anything?” She asked as she grabbed her purse and keys. Archie shook his head. “Call me if you need me...” she offered before she left and started toward the Pembrooke.
