(con't) The finale of Hadestown sums up everything about WHY musicals and art are made - we always want to see the story turn out different - probably why things like Titanic are so compelling. It's the "maybe this time the ship won't sink...."
I think it’s a combination of “maybe this time...” but also the inevitability. I go to Hadestown and Titanic when I need a good cry because I know what I’m about to put myself through, and that’s the best part of tragedy, in my opinion--despite how very sad those shows are, I always feel better after I’ve seen them, because catharsis. I confess I’m partial to the NYTW cast recording of Hadestown so I’ve only ever heard that version of the finale but I love how stripped down it is.
