Avery Stark | 47 | Space fighter pilot | Done with everyone’s shit and yet still also cares a lot
Shocking as it might seem, but even the novelty of flying space craft around the Milky Way can become as tiresome as driving to work everyday. So when the chance to travel in the depths of space, following a message beamed from across the stars, Avery leaps at the chance to spread her wings and fly. There’s a whole galaxy out there and she’s going to see it all. First, though, she’s gotta keep her motley band from killing themselves as they venture into this brave new galaxy. Shouldn’t be so hard, should it?
Scene snapshot:
“Looking pretty good, Isra,” Avery drawls, shuffling to stand just within Isra’s peripheral version. “Looks like you scrub up pretty good. Don’t wear the slippers to the party though. All those furry aliens might take offense.”
“Noted,” Isra squeezes out, sliding the final pin into place. “Ta-da! And I agree, by the way. I do scrub up good.”
Avery laughs a little before sobering quickly. “Yes, well, this isn’t actually why I’m here. Let’s sit, shall we? I’m actually here about the incident earlier, on the flight over here. The one where you insulted our host to his face.”
“Ah.” Isra winces and twists her hands around her lap. “In my defence, I did apologise first.”
“Actually I think you were completely justified. And I said as much to those two when they came to complain. Just try not to make it a regular occurrence. That said, I am proud that you stood up for yourself in the way you did. These people need to be taken down a peg or two.” Avery side-eyes Isra little, pride and disapproval warring in her eyes. “If you were my kid, I’d still ground you for being such a smartass. As your captain, I’m saying to be more careful with what you say. But as your friend, I’m saying well done.”
Then Avery gives her a quick pat on the shoulder and slips from the room without another word. Isra just sits on the bed, mind whirring madly. Of all the things she expected Avery to say about the whole thing, ‘well done’ wasn’t one of them. Today, it seems, is just continuing to be made of one odd event after the other.
