Whenever Grian gets startled, his wings puff out. And, he drops a feather or two.

Once they learned it doesn't hurt him, it became a competition among hermits to see who could jumpscare Grian the most, with points being measured by how many feathers a hermit has.

Avian headcanons [fighting]

It's important to note that Avians don't usually fight, they are mostly pretty calm with the exception of some subspecies or closed off groups. However, even those don't usually attack, unless threatened or bothered.

Despite their peaceful demeanor they may get into arguments and fights in the following situations:

Stuck/ trapped with only one/ very few peers in extremely closed evoirment.

To protect their mate/friends/family from someone or something - might even be another avian(more explanation below)

Explanation:

1: This is usually due to a terrible practice among some people who don't believe the avians have intelligence.

Some groups from different races enjoy making them fight and betting on them. They capture and stress and frustrate avians ok purpose to get them angry for a good fight. Many times leaving them in very small cages with their opponent and start the process, with both of them constantly annoyed they instigate them to blame each other for their suffering.

2: this rarely occurs between avians, most likely to happen between the avian and some other creature.

They are loyal and very protective. Not much more to say.

3: Avians who become paranoid or delusional might become violent, usually towards specific individuals who they think have something to do with their delusion or ones trying to help them.

Avians who become too violent might get thrown out of their village/ group... Avians usually try to help and nurse their peers back to health, but they tend to give up after some time if they see no signs of them getting better... Especially if they are violent.

Obs: avians who are living on their own, outside of their usual villages or other types of civilization within the species, might be more keen to violence and prone to attack other creatures since they don't benefit from the safety of a community. although, that is very uncommon.

Some avians have been reported to becoming more defensive, violent and even starting to enjoy violence when practicing violence constantly.

Here’s a concept: Natural-born avians don’t exist. 

All avians were born without wings or feathers or annoying birdbrain instincts. They all used to be human, or something similar. And then something happened that caused them to Fledge. 

All avians are connected to death, or chaos, or catastrophe. 

Philza is one of the greatest hardcore players ever. He’s so renowned that he claims the plainspeak name of the universe as his own: Philza Minecraft. (For someone so good at living, dying must have felt like the end of the world.)   He’s successfully courted Lady Death herself. His wings are the color of the dragons he’s fought over and over again, and the endless expanse of the void. His wings are the same shifting shades of inky darkness as the shimmering folds of Death’s dress. 

Grian is... a bit of an enigma. He vanished from his old server (he was kidnapped, or so the rumors say) and when he resurfaced it was with brightly-colored wings sprouting from his back. He doesn’t fear death (look at the games he plays) and he’s an agent of chaos. His feathers make sense, even if no one can pin down exactly when and why he Fledged. 

TommyInnit doesn’t have wings, not yet, but’s close. There’s feathers in his hair (white, for the innocence of youth long since stolen) and his dreams are filled with clouds and starlight. He has died and come back. He is at a tipping point. He might Fledge. He might not. Only time will tell. 

Scott Smajor is luckier than most, or else he’s something entirely new. How many people win a game of death and take snowy white owl’s wings as their prize? (Owls aren’t known for their loyalty. Perhaps they should be.) But that is another world, another time, and although Smajor has always been different, perhaps this is too different. 

Jimmy’s Fledging has been imminent for a long time now. He’s always at the forefront of disaster, an unwitting herald of swiftly approaching doom. One more world-ending disaster is all it takes, and the next time he awakes there’s golden feathers in his bed and wings the color of sunlight swelling beneath his skin. (Sing, poor canary, and don’t you dare stop.)

I also feel that Avians are probably considered like massive egos and soft while in reality they hailed from predators and some (Grian) won’t let people forget that. Yes Jimmy can go feral as well if he wants. Just a race people think are soft when they are actually dangerous.

I won't lie, I kind of love this. Grian is certainly enough of a menace (and a terror in the Life games) for his friends to already be aware of it, but his friendly face can sometimes make you forget that. (His size is a misdirection, he could tear you to pieces in a heartbeat with the proper motivation.)

Meanwhile Jimmy doesn't often let that side of him show, meaning most of his regular servermates haven't seen his sharper side - but that doesn't mean he doesn't have one.

Just try and get between Jimmy and his flock. Just try. (Those talons aren't just for show, buddy, and you're about to find out what they're used for.)

i'm picturing tiny kid avian pearl as being a little like the idiot parrot my mother had, i.e. not great at turning in the air and prone to impulsively taking off in whatever direction she was already facing

hermits with wings (grian, pearl, etc) generally prefer not to get sand in their wings. the water isn't bad - it's annoying for a bit, but it'll dry - but sand is so itchy and irritating between their feathers! of course, they want to have a beach day with everyone else, so they deal with it.

this means, of course, that the hermits hold preening parties afterwards to get all of the sand out of their friends' wings! it's one of the winged hermits' favorite parts of beach days <3

Yes. This is true. The avians of the server may not be the closest friends but they know how to preen.

All the avians on the server (Pearl, Grian, False, whoever else because I always forget and sometimes Taurtis because he visits, he's a raven) get in line! It's time for a group preening session.

They all get to preen each others wings, Grian preening Taurtis', Taurtis preening Pearl, Pearl preening False, and False preening Grian once Pearls done.

But of course, They get all cuddly, so Gem, Scar, and (i don't know who False is 'close' with) Doc(?) get to come. Taurtis and Grian get Scar, Pearl gets Gem, and False gets Doc. But they're all smushed together anyway, so it doesn't matter much.

They all make cute little chirping sounds. 🥰
