24. Illustrious

Remeraux was ravenous for renown, once. So hungry it made her bones ache.

Every action, every step, was to make herself unforgettable. She wanted to walk into any room and for every eye to be on her. She didn’t mind if she was polarizing, even. The only thing worse than distaste for her was indifference. Battlefields, she met in a gown and a full face of make-up. Brick by brick she built herself a reputation. Daughter of a corsair reaver. One of the last Crimson Duelists. Freedom fighter. All these titles and accolades so many strips of papier-mâché, that would one day solidify into something that stood on its own, regardless of how empty she felt it was on the inside. 

Remeraux would get her wish, of course.

Opalescent eyes spotted her across a smoky Hingan lounge, unmistakable in her crimson garb. Snow white teeth flashed in a hungry grin. Their owner would pass on a message to her shadowy associates, who had never forgotten her: who she was or what she’d done.

Five words, transmitted in code.
