Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI meet for the first time in the graphic novel "Who Was Raised to be the Queen of France?"
During the alarm for the life of the Queen, regret at not possessing an heir to the throne was not even thought of. The King himself was wholly occupied with the care of preserving an adored wife.
The Memoirs of Madame Campan
For serious though: Who the hell would want a Fersen when you could have a Louis???? Screw that arrogant, rude, Madame Royale stalking weirdo. I'll take a man who refers to me as the "Height of perfection" over his nasty ass any day.
The fairy Elisabeth leaves the room and returns with something, I think, held behind her tiny back. “Toinette,” she says, for so I have instructed her to call me, despite the glances of bored disapproval from my governess, Comtesse de Noailles. “Toinette.” (The word fairly twirls off her tongue; she is the first at this court to use it.) “My brother the Dauphin has asked that I give you this.” From behind her back, she charmingly presents a pink rose, so perfect I think at first it must be fashioned of silk of porcelain. “Smell,” Elisabeth says. I bury my nose in the aroma, such as no jewel of any price can produce. “My brother, the Dauphin, says there will be many more. To tell you so,” Quickly I glance at the door, where, yes, a large and lumbering figure passes, ignored by all, even on his wedding day. Again I bend to the little princess. “Please pass this gift to your brother, the Dauphin,” I say, softly kissing her petal cheek. ‘Just like that.“ I instruct her more minutely: “Ask him to bend over, so you can speak in his private ear. First the kiss, then whisper, ‘She, too, says there will be many more.’”
Abundance, A Novel of Marie Antoinette - Sena Jeter Naslund
Antoinette’s first reaction to Louis, we do not know. But we do have the view of the Duchess of Northumberland, who was staying with Choisuel’s friend, the Maréchale de Mirepoix , and like Antoinette had been given an unfavourable report of Louis.
“I expected to have found him horrid,” she noted in her diary, “But on the contrary his figure pleas’d me very well. He is tall and slender with a countenance très intéressant and a look of good sense, his complexion is rather pale and his eyes are large. He has a great quantity of fair hair which grows very well to his face.”
Louis’s first reaction to Antoinette was probably also one of agreeable surprise, for all those close to him were predisposed against Austria and had seized on any points against her. She was certainly a very pretty girl, with not very full breasts, beautiful arms and hands, eyes as blue as his own and a rose and white complexion. She was less tall than he: “very little and slender”, according to the Duchess of Northumberland. “I should not have taken her to be above twelve years old. She is fair and a little marked with smallpox.”
