“Test number four of Future Gadget prototype twelve: Longshot Meterstick. Previous tests have indicated accurate measurements at distances of ten meters. Now commencing testing at a distance of twenty meters.”
Okarin ended the recording and put his phone in his pocket, and brandished the Longshot Meterstick. This latest Future Gadget was constructed from an old telescope, the broken handle from what was presumably a water gun, and some shards of plexiglass with markings drawn on them in marker. It’s purpose: to size up your enemies before they can reach you (or if you don’t have enemies for measuring objects that are too far to measure by hand.
Thus far it only worked for objects less than two meters tall. It’s accuracy was within about half of a meter. Also if most objects within its tested range were too close for the telescope to focus on.
Okarin knelt and aimed at a sign across the street and started fiddling with the scope to properly find the height when a form passed across the top half of the sign. He let out a yelp and threw himself back against the nearest wall with a motion just a little too rehearsed to look natural, and brandished the telescope like a gun.
“What kind of foul trickery is this? Stay back! I know the Organization sent you!” he yelled before actually processing what he was seeing. Even then, understanding he was seeing a kid floating by didn’t inspire any better reaction.
