FFXIV Write 2021 - 06: Avatar

Soulus zos Galvus slouched on his throne, only half-listening to the incident report. Something about a citizen transport malfunctioning, its imminent collision only being stopped by the actions of a quick-thinking conscript. The officer asked if the Emperor would like an audience with the hero of the day, and Solus nodded. A few words of thanks, he supposed, and the matter would be finished.

The hero in question entered, a silver-haired Miqo’te. An officer trailed behind him. Eyes unfocused, Solus glanced in their direction as they saluted… and he froze. The reporting officer gave their names, but Solus wasn’t listening. He knew the color of that soul. It was faint, but unmistakable. Can’t help playing the hero, can you, Azem? he thought to himself. Solus glanced at the officer accompanying the shard of his old, dear friend. She was clearly displeased with the attention the hero was getting. “This one serves under you?” he asked. “He belongs to me, yes, Your Radiance,” she responded. “I see,” the Emperor said, “An engineer, I presume?” “Of sorts,” the officer said, hesitantly. “Then I feel his skills are being squandered under your watch,” Solus said, straightening his posture, “He has proven himself loyal to the Empire by his deeds. Thus, I hereby grant our hero of the hour limited citizenship and the title of Architectus.” “A… a field engineer?” the officer sputtered, “My lord, I have need of…!”

“I have spoken!” Solus hissed, “Are you questioning my judgment?” “N-no… Your Radiance…” The Emperor nodded and turned his gaze to the stunned Miqo’te, who stammered and bowed low. “...Your Radiance is… quite generous.” “I trust you will give your all to bring glory to the Empire.” The Miqo’te – Azem’s shard – nodded and gave another salute before the Emperor dismissed the group with a wave of his hand. When he was alone again, Solus slumped, sighing. Of all the times for Azem’s shard on the Source to make an appearance... “...the least I can do for you, old friend. Do try to stay out of trouble.”
