ABB Azipod D series of gearless thruster
Going high and dry....
Carnival Cruise Line’s cruise ship Carnival Vista has only been in service for just over three years, but it’s been plagued recently by problems with its azipod propulsion system....restricting the ship’s speed and maneuverability.
So, from July 12 to July 24, 2019, the huge 1,000-foot-long (300 meters), 135,000-ton cruise ship will be residing in a floating drydock to make repairs to the azipods which hang underwater below the ship’s stern.
As the photos (the first three are artist’s conceptions) above illustrate, the ship will first be floated into the partially-submerged drydock....secured in place....the drydock refloated with the Carnival Vista onboard....then transported to a shipyard in Freeport, Bahamas....and repairs effected.
At the end of the repairs, reverse the whole process....
Carnival Vista will go back to cruising at the end of July 2019
And, with a little luck -- and a lot of hard work -- the cruise ship will resume its normal week-long Caribbean cruises out of its homeport in Galveston, Texas with its scheduled July 27th sailing.

>>Note: AZIPOD means “Azimuth Podded Drive”....and is becoming increasingly common as the method of propulsion for many cruise ships and other types of vessels (like icebreakers) requiring high maneuverability and focused propulsive power.
Rather than “push” a ship through the water -- like conventional propellers -- azipods actually appear to be mounted backwards, as they “pull” a vessel through the water.
In addition, the azipods turn as a unit -- eliminating the need for rudders for steering a ship.

Disney Wish Construction Update – Azipod Installation Time-lapse
Recently, Walt Disney Imagineering shared a time-lapse of the installation of both azipods underneath the Disney Wish‘s stern. Unlike the current Disney Cruise Line ships, the LNG-powered Triton Class, beginning with the Wish will use azipods. Azipod propulsion is a gearless steerable propulsion system where the electric drive motor is housed within a pod outside the ship hull. Azipod units can…
