The events that unfolded after your parents’ crimes were revealed were chaotic, to say the least. The Shogun was infuriated upon hearing of yet another betrayal within an important clan. The detail that your parents were working with the Fatui on an assassination attempt only added to her fury. After all the chaos they had instigated in Inazuma, it was salt in the wound that they were meddling in the powerful families as well as the common folk. Their crimes were revealed to the public and they were made to walk from Ritou to Tenshukaku. The people lined the streets all the way there, hurling insults and curses at them for dealing with public enemy #1, along with trying to overthrow their own clan leadership. Their estate was now property of the remaining Hiiragi clan members and they were to be removed from all family records. What happened once they reached Tenshukaku remained unknown, but it’s safe to say that you nor anyone else will never see them again.
While all this chaos was going on, Ayato kept you safe and protected in the Kamisato Estate. He knew that these events had caused you much distress and being out in public was the last thing you wanted. The press wanted nothing more than a statement from you, and they were relentless. Ayato had forced them to omit many of the details relating to your parents’ abuse. He wanted you to keep your privacy and dignity as much as possible, especially considering your living situation. The guards were ordered to let no one in unless they were part of the Yashiro Commission, and you were eternally grateful for his support through such a big life change.
The day you had first set foot in his estate, you were awestruck by how beautiful it was. While the Hiiragi household felt stuffy and cold with its dimly lit hallways and dark-colored wood comprising every crevice of the building, the Kamisato house was calm, serene even. Ponds and colorful foliage were spotted throughout the courtyard and the most lovely decor lined the shelves inside. More importantly, it was filled with such kind-hearted people. You were welcomed with open arms and Thoma’s home cooked meal of miso soup and tempura shrimp. You also received a great deal of support from the people of Inazuma who admired your bravery and strength for enduring the cruelties of your parents for years as well as exposing a weak point in the tri-commission. It was safe to say that you had become a well-loved figure practically overnight. After a few months had passed though, the chaos eventually died down.
Ayato got back to his duties as soon as you were in a good place and soon enough, his first trip away from home came. This one in particular was to Watatsumi Island to meet with the Divine Priestess Sangonomiya Kokomi after the Kanjou commission had their military involvement on the island halted due to the instability. The Shogun, now only having complete trust in the Yashiro Commission, requested that Ayato personally go and maintain peace between Watatsumi and Narukami island. After bidding farewell to you and his sister, he left immediately.
Being gone for about 9 days so far, you had some time to think about him. He was the man the Almighty Shogun saw worthy amongst all the clans of Inazuma and you couldn’t possibly be more proud. If everything went well, he should be home very soon. While he was away, you took up some of the responsibilities of the Yashiro Commission. Ayato had taught you everything he could about his work in the short amount of time you’d had and he was pleasantly surprised at how quick you caught on. In fact, you would come up with ideas and strategies which made his work easier than ever. He loved working with you and he knew he had made the right decision in choosing you as his better half. You had earned plenty of respect within the rest of the Yashiro Commission as well. Everyone admired your ability to think quickly and find a solution for every problem that cropped up, not only within the house but at events as well.
Today however, there was no urgent work to be done. A free day was rare for Ayaka, so the two of you chose to take a walk in Inazuma City to spend some time together and buy some things for yourselves. The day was light and peaceful, with the sun out and a few clouds to dampen the heat. As you passed through large violet trees and up a few sets of stairs, you were hit with the hustle and bustle of the big city, not at all like the merchants and sailors of Ritou. Immediately, you started approaching the stalls to get a closer look, completely enamored. Colorful fabrics, shiny hairpins, intricately patterned fans, gilded wooden boxes, kitsune masks, books on all sorts of topics. Anything you could dream of, someone was selling it. Lining the sides of the streets were buildings containing restaurants with cuisines from all over Teyvat, bathhouses, grocers, little carts selling snacks, and more. There was even a booth with a kind looking woman in a green dress with a steady stream of people in matching uniforms coming and going, apparently off to work. You had to admit, it was all a little overwhelming. You found your mind wandering to prevent yourself from shutting down completely at the foreignness. While you two were walking to the next shop, you couldn’t help but ask Ayaka something that had been on your mind for a bit now.
“Ayaka, this may be a little random to ask now, but what’s it like having a vision?”
She was taken aback at your sudden question, but answered nonetheless.
“Having a vision? Hmm, it certainly is a handy thing to have. If I’m being very honest with you though, I seldom use it in my daily life, mostly just when I’m in combat situations. Why do you ask?”
You looked away, sighing softly.
“There are times when I wish I had a vision too. Not because I need divine validation, but because I want to be strong.”
Ayaka took your hands in hers, smiling brightly.
“Hey, who said you aren’t strong?”
You laughed, giving her a playful hit on her arm.
“It’s the truth! I can't fight, I have never in my life wielded a weapon. I cannot even defend myself!”
Ayaka shook her head, not understanding your point at all.
“But we have the Shuumatsuban, we have the guards, and Inazuma is at peace now.”
“Ayaka, you’re not getting it. We are noble women, and you know all too well that assassination attempts aren’t uncommon. I don’t wish to be a burden. I know Ayato constantly worries about my safety, especially while he is away. I can imagine him pacing back and forth in his tent at this very moment wondering if I am okay or not. But it’s not the same when it comes to you because somewhere he knows that you are a master of Taijutsu. You can fight to defend yourself. I, on the other hand, need constant protection from someone else.”
Ayaka’s eyes softened, as your words reminded her of her mother. She always stressed the importance of noble ladies knowing how to defend themselves, and she was the one who helped teach Ayaka the art of Taijutsu. You weren’t wrong though, so she could not disagree with your words. She could however offer some help.
“You don’t need a vision to be strong. My mother didn’t have a vision and she still mastered many combat techniques. Tell me this, would you like me to teach you how to fight?” She asked.
“Ayato might be against it though.”
“Of course not! Sure, he might be worried you’d get hurt, but I’m sure he would understand in the end. Brother would do anything to make you happy!”
You blushed at that, but took her words into consideration. Learning how to fight would certainly be very useful, vision or not.
“Alright, I’ll do it. But you’ll have to be patient with me, I don’t even know how to hold a weapon.”
Ayaka couldn’t contain her excitement, walking ahead to turn around and face you while walking backwards.
“Oh relax! Now tell me this, what weapon do you wish to master? A sword, a polearm, a bow or a claymore?”
“Hmm...A polearm is what Thoma uses the most, isn’t it? Honestly I’ve been drawn to it for a long time, I especially enjoy watching him practice.”
“It’s settled then! I’m sure Thoma would love to help you out. Besides, he is an amazing teacher and sparring partner!”
You couldn’t help but notice the radiance of Ayaka’s face when she spoke of Thoma you’d never seen before.
“Hey hey, slow down Ayaka, we still have to inform Ayato. I wouldn’t want to upset him or hide anything from him.”
“Oh, my apologies! I just got so excited at the thought of you learning how to fight! When he gets back, maybe he'll agree to help too. You know, he can use both a sword and a polearm.”
You both chuckled, and proceeded to spend the rest of your afternoon and into the evening chatting and relaxing together. It was now late at night, the moon shining brightly to light up the dark sky. You had made it safely back to the estate telling Ayaka to head in while you stayed behind outside. After such a busy day, standing in the garden gazing at the ocean and stars, tranquility of the night was welcome. The past few months had been so chaotic but magical, and you had never been this happy. You closed your eyes feeling the cool breeze off of the sea engulf you. Suddenly, you gasped at the sensation of someone grabbing you from behind, thinking it may be a kidnapper.
“AAAAAAAA! What-“
And then you heard a familiar deep chuckle. The voice you had been yearning to hear for days ringing in your ears like the finest melody ever played.
“Relax daarin, it’s me.”
Turning around quickly to finally hug him properly, you saw his face light up at the sight of you with a basket of trinkets from the city..
“Ayato! Archons, I’ve missed you so much.”
He smiled, his heart filling with warmth and joy as he embraced you. He only wanted to hide you in his arms to have all to himself.
“So have I, sweetheart. But what are you doing up so late, hmm? You should be fast asleep by now.”
You giggled softly, snuggling closer in his embrace.
“I couldn’t sleep yet, so I decided to enjoy the starry sky. But now that you’re here, the sky can wait.”
Ayato laughed heartily at your words. Every word you spoke made him fall more in love with you. All the tiredness he felt from his journey was gone just like magic and you were all he needed.
“Someone’s become quite the sweet talker since I last saw her,” he teased with a sly smile, making you blush.
Your palm connected with his arm playfully.
“Oh hush, you little-! How was your trip to Watatsumi island? Did everything go well?”
Ayato nodded with a bright grin, still holding you close.
“Yes, everything went well. Though the Divine Priestess was reserved at first, she accepted the proposals of the Shogunate and the Yashiro Commission wholeheartedly in the end with very little negotiation. Soon, she will pay a visit to Narukami island to strengthen the peace and trade between the two islands.”
You smiled, cupping his cheeks and pulling him down to place a soft kiss on his forehead.
“Ayato, that’s amazing news! The Shogun will be very pleased to hear.”
He felt his heart flutter at your words. No one else’s opinion mattered, not even the Shogun. Only yours.
“Thank you, my dear. Ah, that reminds me, I have a gift for you. Lady Kokomi was very kind so as to offer me to take a gift as a token of gratitude. I must say, Watatsumi Island has some very fine jewelry, and I bought this for you.”
You gasped softly as Ayato opened a light pink embroidered box, revealing a delicate and enchanting ring. Inside the curving metal lay a perfectly cut heart-shaped amethyst, surrounded with delicate crystals. The ring shined every time the moonlight fell upon it from any angle and the twinkle of the stone reminded you of Ayato’s eyes every time he looked at you.
“Oh Ayato…this is so beautiful!”
He smiled and gently held your left hand, slipping it on your right ring finger. It fit perfectly, as if it was simply made for you. He gently kissed your hand, his eyes so soft and full of love.
“I’m glad it is to your liking, daarin.”
As you looked at him, standing there gazing at you, your heartbeat raced and you realized instantly: you had fallen hopelessly, magically, and endlessly in love with this man. He made you feel complete, he made you a better person. He had been so patient and loving with you, and now it was time that you gave him what he needed in return. You stepped forward, pulling his forehead to yours.
“I love you.”
Ayato’s eyes widened, countless emotions clouding his senses. Did he hear that right?
“Did you just say…?”
You smile even wider, more confident this time.
“I love you, Ayato. You brought light into my life. I mean every word I say, and I’m so thankful that I have you by my side. I don’t think I’ll ever say it enough.”
You watched as his eyes filled with tears, a broken grin forming on his face with them. He hugged you so close, gently lifting you by under your arms to spin you around, never wishing to let go.
“Oh my, you have no idea how much joy you give me, daarin. I love you so much too. I always have and I always will. You are my everything and I swear to make you happy until the day I die.”
He then pulled back from the embrace, looking at you. You looked so beautiful under the night sky with your hair lightly flowing in the breeze. He quickly glanced down at your lips then back up to your eyes.
“May I, my love?”
You nodded shyly, making his heart melt even more. He held you close, first placing a sweet kiss on your forehead to express his love and respect, then one on each cheek. He pulled you impossibly closer, leaning in to connect his lips with yours. The euphoria was unlike anything you had ever experienced. They were so soft and his touch was so delicate. There you both stood under the night sky, sharing your first kiss with each other as the moon and stars were the only witness. Your arms wrapped around his neck while his were around your waist, wanting you as close as possible. This was the best feeling in the world and the memory would forever engrave itself upon your hearts and souls.
