Bathtub Relaxation Wine for today: the @four8wineworks Pink. If I remember right, this bottle is the 2018 or 2019 vintage, and is 100% Sangiovese from Al Buhl Memorial Vineyard in the Willcox AVA... Or it could be 100% Sangiovese from one of @caduceuscellars' Verde Valley vineyard sites. (I do remember Sangiovese though!) This wine is a bright and cheerful rose-pink hue that honestly is so much in the springtime mode that I fucking expected the Easter Bunny to pop out when I poured it into my glass. The nose is full of peaches, strawberry, quince, white cherry, anise, expensive mineral water, and watermelon. The palate has fantastic acidity, which immediately makes me want to pound this whole bottle, but I need to save just a little for the post-soak cookout. Notes of strawberry, quince, guava, watermelon, black pepper and limestone dust form a delicious medley that again, just makes me want to pound this wine. If it was about 5 degrees colder, I honestly don't think anything would stop me from pounding this right now in the tub. Suggested Pairings: Location: your porch. Tragically, as amazing as this wine would be on a beach, that option is not available to me. Also the bottle is glass, so... Food: none, or hot dogs and hamburgers. Cigar: nah, fam. Don't smoke a cigar with this beauty. Let the fruit punch you in the face. Music: Yacht Rock or, if a super nerd, "Hanno the Navigator," by Al Stewart. @pb_and_jaleh inspired me, since she drank her bottle of the 2017 Minotaur from @odditywinecollective the other night. So, I'm currently hiding in my parent's bathtub, sipping my bottle, while they babysit Pippin and watch that big game or whatever. The 2017 Minotaur is a wine truly in need of a great Theseus statement. So let me start by saying this Mourvèdre, sourced from Cimarron Vineyard in the Willcox AVA, is a savory expression of this varietal. Aromas of cherry, boysenberry, and huckleberry intermingle with anise, sandalwood, and wisteria on the nose. On the Palate, the Minotaur charges onto the tongue with bright red fruits: red currants, cherry, plum, and pomegranate jam, with subtle graphite, stone, and earth. The finish is long and savory, with notes of vanilla, sandalwood, and anise emerging as the wine descends down your throat. I want to pair this wine with a juicy cheeseburger or venison ribs. "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." What do we do with our time? What *should* we do with our time? This question, and the words of Gandalf run through my mind as I drink the 2012 vintage of the "2", from @sandreckonervineyard. I am pretty sure I bought this bottle the first time I met Rob in his Willcox winery facility, years ago. This bottle is one of the few "apocalypse bottles" in my stash here in Jerome, and with a world at the edge of... something, it seemed a fitting time to open it. The 2012 vintage of the 2 is a Super-Tuscan style blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Syrah, sourced from the high desert plains of what is now the Willcox AVA. Back in 2012, the Willcox AVA was just a dream, and everything had to be labeled as Cochise County. 9 years ago, I was hurtling myself back across country from Boston, back to the desert lands that grew my bones. What have I done in that time? Have I made a good use of it? I like to think so, though some could make a cromulent argument that the 2012 "2" has aged better than myself. This wine is, frankly, a voluptuous wonder. Rich, and savory, I feel this wine captures the hope and potential that the Arizona wine industry had back then, let alone now. On the nose, the "2" opens with savory aromas of cherry, plum, boysenberry and bilberry, intermingling with latakia tobacco, granite, anise, and candied iris. The palate, too, is a rich wonderland; a velvety mouthfeel kissed with just a bit of peppery tannins and the briny salinity of lost seas. The rich fruit flavors of cherry, plum, and boysenberry continue into the finish, with hints of sagebrush, anise, lavender, fig, and tobacco. That voluptuous finish lingers for minutes, like the sweet, fading memory of a satisfying kiss. If you happen to be blessed by either Dionysios or St. Vincent of Saragossa to have a bottle of the 2012 "2" in your stash, make the time to drink it now. Don't wait for the special occasion. While I feel this wine would hold up for another 5 years without issue... Why wait?
