Does B Corp certification guarantee that a company is the most ethical and sustainable choice? Hmmmm...well, sometimes? But also...not always? And to make matters even more complicated, there are soooooo many amazing ethical companies that just can’t afford the certification process. So not having B Corp certification is not a clear indicator that a brand/company is NOT ethical and sustainable.
But yes, in an era when B Lab is certifying Nestle-owned companies, MLMs, and fast fashion brands....well, suddenly B Corp certification just feels like another greenwashing tool.
If you’re asking yourself “well, now where should I shop?” The answer isn’t as difficult as it seems. For one, there are tools out there like Good on You that help you find ethical, sustainable clothing brands.
When it comes to other categories of products, become a greenwashing detective! TBH it took me approximately 5 seconds of internet searching to find out all the dirt on Nespresso. I just searched “Nespresso greenwashing” and “Nespresso controversies.” It was that easy! And I know that you can do it, too! Should we HAVE to do this? Eh not in an ideal world. But alas, we live in a world full of gross greenwashing and sketchy marketing. So we gotta put in the extra few minutes of work. And I know that the slow fashion community is smart and ready to solve a greenwashing mystery!
