Song of the Day: Thursday, 4/16/26 (#26)
Today's Song of the Day is "Play'n It Raw" by B.G. featuring the Hot Boys, released in 1999 as the fourth track from his album Chopper City in the Ghetto. You can find the Song of the Day on Spotify, SoundCloud (requires subscription), and Apple Music.
"Play'n It Raw" is a classic Southern gangsta rap song. There's a little triangle (I think) in the back which serves as the main distinguishing element of the beat, while there's a synth playing around even farther in the background that honestly sounds a little G-funk influenced, but what do I know. It also might be described as a dirty south track, if you feel so inclined.
This song is legally speaking a posse cut, with verses from all four Hot Boyz (Lil Wayne, B.G., Turk, and Juvenile), although at 4:30 it's a pretty short one. Each verse is, to be honest, pretty unremarkable in terms of substance or content, but who cares about that shit? The rhyming is good and the calm rhythm of the older (like, 19) members perfectly rides the beat, while a 16-year-old Lil Wayne's flow is much hungrier and provides some nuance and contrast to the laid-back environment generated by his rhyming compatriots. I wouldn't really know, but this seems like a great song to smoke to.
B.G. is a rapper in the Cash Money sphere, which is pretty much all you need to know. He was part of the Hot Boyz, mentioned earlier. He signed to Cash Money at 12, like Lil Wayne; Birdman is weird as fuck. Apparently Birdman met him in a barbershop after he dropped out of middle school and started selling crack, and Birdman and his brother Slim "let him stay with them," which sounds fucking bizarre to me, but whatever, man. He went to jail for like 11 years in 2012 and just got released in 2023.
