Estimated Word Count - 30-35k though it will be split into a prologue and 5 chapters
A/N - this fic is inspired by A Marriage of Inconvenience originally written by @choco-mark which i highly recommend. if you’ve already read the series then you can think of this as an alternate pathway where the reader ends up with taeyong. i had sent an ask in to Mina’s blog a while ago when the series was still ongoing explaining why i thought the reader should be with taeyong though i wasn’t able to find it so instead i’ll link her response to my review of the series here.
Taglist - lmk if you’d like to be on the list !!
“So as you can see, marrying Lee Taeyong would not only ensure our safety but yours as well. There’s no doubt that you’ll be well protected with him and he has more than enough money to buy whatever you could think of asking for.” Your mother explains, trying to reason with you.
“Chenle, did you know?” You ask, looking over at your brother. “Did you know this entire time? Is that why you started training separately from me? Because now you’re supposed to be the head of the family?”
He shrugs complacently. “Just doing what I’m being told.”
“Was all the eighteen years we spent together nothing to you?” You accuse, nearly yelling at him. “We lived our lives promising to lead together someday, Chenle. You promised.”
“Yeah, well, sometimes promises have to be broken for the greater good. We can’t lead together only to be taken over. Besides, it’s not like we have much of a presence in the mafia world anyways, we’re literally begging to be run down.” Chenle says apprehensively.
Memories of your childhood together flashed before you from the first time you and Chenle realized that your parents had names and weren’t just ‘mom’ and ‘dad’ to the first time you both held a gun, or to when you had locked him out of the house and forced him to climb the wall and into the window of his bedroom on the second floor. Chenle had been your best friend and you had been his for his entire life and yet he had the audacity to sell you out like this.

Song: Back 2 U (feat. Walk The Moon)
Artist: Steve Aoki & Boehm
Requested:
Yuta x Reader + “Back 2 U (AM 1:27)” + Angst
“I barely fell asleep late at night, but the ringing sound wakes me up. Now I’m so used to your calls, should I pick up or not?” Yuta isn’t asleep when his phone rings at 1:27 in the morning. He should be sleeping, he has practice in a few hours and a whole day of work ahead of him. He doesn’t sleep, partially because he can’t and partially because he’s waiting for you, for your call. Almost like a broken record, Yuta reaches for his phone that lays next to him on the bed, an appropriate replacement of you since you blow up his phone at night anyway. Yuta squints as he reads the caller ID, unsure of why he is checking on who is calling him if he knows it’s you. For a split second, the record scratches- Yuta wonders why his fingers automatically press the “Accept” button every time you call him if he knows that what’s waiting for him on the other side will ruin him for the next week.
“Then I tell myself this is the last time as I press the button. Your crying voice shakes me up again.” Yuta shakes away his thoughts and presses the button, he hears your cries before he raises the phone to his ear. His heart is weaker than a minute ago, his eyes wide awake and watering as he only breathes into the speaker. “Yuta?” You ask from your side of the line, voice small and helpless- like it is every time you call him at 1:27 in the morning. Despite this broken record repeating, Yuta feels heartbreak every time he listens to your song. He still cares, he still loves you; no matter how hard it is for him, but he can never forget what you did to him.
“Now you say you want to come back in to my world… In the overflowing texts and emails, I try to push you away because I knew we couldn’t be together.” “I think… I made a mistake-” Your trembling voice speaks up after the silence, “Yuta, I want to come back.” Yuta still hasn’t said anything, he doesn’t think he can with how far his heart is in his throat. He swallows to try to push it back down and his silence makes you continue. “Yuta?” You ask again, your voice almost hopeful. The spinning of Yuta’s ceiling fan sends him into a flashback of the relationship you shared together and his head starts to hurt. The things he’s shared with you in confidence, the nights you’ve spent together in this same bed, the times you told him you’ll always love him. Yuta guesses you were kind of right, you still love him after all this time. But is this the love Yuta wants from you? This messed up, complicated love?
“I’m not the same as before… Every time you do this, I break down. Now don’t look for me anymore. I’m not going back.” “Go back to sleep.” Yuta grunts out, and he feels hopeless when you release another sob, regret instantly filling him and he sits up. “Please, Yuta. I made a mistake.” Your begging made Yuta finally break, his tears messily falling down his cheeks and onto his phone. Yuta remembers the words you told him months ago. “There’s someone else, Yuta…” He remembers the betrayal, and the disbelief he felt when you said your next words. “I regret it. Please, forgive me.” Yuta could forgive, but forgetting was something else. How could he be with you after the image of you in someone else’s arms crossed his mind? And the fact that you consented and willingly cheated on him? He doesn’t think he has any courage left. Yuta was so tired of this, of the same song coming from your lips. He composed himself and spoke once again, for the last time. “Go back to sleep.” And hung up the phone.
“I barely fell asleep late at night. The ringing sound wakes me up, but I turn around and close my eyes.” On another night, at 1:27am, Yuta’s phone rings its tune from its side of the bed. Yuta’s eyes open as he catches a glimpse of your caller ID. He lets it ring, turning over to face the other side and closing his eyes. Finally, your song ends here.
