Mini Guide - "Construction of backgrounds" I've seen a lot of folks speaking about their struggle with drawing backgrounds in their works, so I whipped up a very quick and rough guide to how I like to approach setting a scene. I think my best advice for folks that struggle with drawing backgrounds would be making sure to treat the background as part of the whole composition, rather than ever just a filler of a space around a character.
How well you draw elements in the background isn't as important as making sure the background is an established piece in the puzzle - it can provide lighting, atmosphere, dramatic heights, contrast…
Sketch out shapes and colors, play with depth and angles & put them together.
Another tip is - varied canvas proportions. Challenging and diversifying the space constraints for a piece in different ways will make you think more decisively about those things

Practicing with backgrounds! It was so stunning seeing this in person, that I needed to paint it! I love how crystal clear the water was! I did see some fish swim by. None of it felt real.
