Hi Li! I've been trying to make sure my portfolio is strong enough for a studio or contract position. I usually lean toward character design and storyboards but I'd like to start incorporating background design as well. Do you have any tips on what to include for that?
#industryQs
Hello! Unfortunately, I'm not a background designer so I wouldn't know where to start with that. ^^; But! My suggestion would be to study industry professionals who mainly focus on background design and reviewed their website, tumblr, instagram, etc. Sometimes the best way to learn is to look at other people's work. Sorry I can't be much of help since BG design is not my forte but I hope researching professional BG artists helps!

Guess who learned the art of 3D paintings!!
This is the bakground for a school shortfilm, somebody wants to watch it once it’s graded? Here’s the concept art for the main/only character:
[ a turnaround of a girl wearing a layered skirt and a veil. Her head is floating and she only has eyes on her face.]
[ sketches of the same girl in the following poses - crossing her arms, looking up, looking at something on her skirt, carrying her head on one hand, holding her head above her body, and looking stoic.]

I’m OPENING MY COMMISSIONS !
I made a quick price list to give you an idea of what I’ll be doing, obviously the price may vary depending on the complexity of the design, rendering, etc. and your budget.
Be as precise as possible if you have an idea of a fanart, an OC or else, with references, drawing or a description of what you want me to do.
I can do some CHARACTER SET with different posings of your OC : it can go from rough to colored posings/expressions, and we can discuss the price together.
Some of you were interested by the GOUACHE characters I did for my palette challenge a while ago (http://shliten.tumblr.com/tagged/palette-challenge), I can do that but the price would be higher (50 $ minimum) than my digital stuff since it’s an original painting (that I’ll send you).
Paiment would be done via Paypal but just send me an e-mail and we could discuss about everything in details :)
This was my previous environment/background design. It's sort of a pre-apocalypse school hallway. This too is too bland. I really need to learn how to paint colors and not just blend them all together. I wanted it to look pretty bright with very dark areas without it looking grey. Like a bright and sunny lit hallway. But I can't seem to find the right colors for it.
This video I watched long years ago inspired me to do something like it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BaB9gYK9FM&t=276s
You have parts of the wall/ceiling/floor that jumps from one color to another https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nINus0lYQjo&t=197s I learned about thay way of using colours here^.
Also using lines to present mood. http://leodewijs.tumblr.com/post/136476098931/some-images-from-my-last-tutorial-on-background
This background has so many parallel lines on it that make it look so boring and cold. I applied what I learned from it on my second background.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/devos/2865373094/sizes/l/in/photostream/ I used this photo as a reference for the 2nd photo. I wanted to highten the mood with painting but I failed. I also wanted to keep the colours pretty much the same but I end up making the scene look like it's afternoon to dawn with the bright purple and orange.
I know I did better tho considering the other paintings I did before. LOL

Everybody out there celebrating Roman's birthday and me like "look at this thing I don't know what it is even though I made it".
To be fair, I made his room last week, I deserve to do something random now.
