it's october and this is whump but it's not whumptober

I'm not writing anything for whumptober but I figured I might as well advertise all the whumpy Slow Horses fics I wrote this year as long as people are in the spirit for that sort of thing. The following are all physical whump just because my personal definition of whump is that it must involve the character struggling with physical injury or illness (but I also have plenty of fics about sad people feeling sad if you're interested in that too.) Anyway...

1) Did you want to see River almost drown in the Thames at the end of season 4? Of course you did! The River is my interpretation of that. (One shot, gen, POV: River & Louisa)

2) Did you read books 7/8 and think to yourself, "gee, I wish McHerron had given us more scenes of River (SPOILERS under cut)

almost dying from Novichok poisoning"? Never fear, I wrote an entire series of fics to help you through that!

Recovery (5-part series):

Part 1 Nobody got to live happy ever after is the one where River gets poisoned. (One shot, gen, POV: River)

Part 2 Someone Could Get Hurt takes place that same day/night as Lamb, Diana, Louisa, and Catherine all show up at the hospital. (7 chapters, gen, POV: those 4 + Sid)

Part 3 Somebody's either dead or they're not takes place the next day when River goes into cardiac arrest and his visitors Louisa and Sid have to awkwardly sit together while waiting to hear whether or not he is dead, resulting in something like bonding. (One shot, gen, POV: Louisa, fun fact: this contains the most tortured metaphor I've ever written which I always consider editing out but for some reason feel oddly charmed by how terrible it is so I leave it even though I hate it)

Part 4 Don't Die is a bunch of vignettes of River's recovery in the hospital over the next few days/weeks/months. (9 chapters, about half gen, half Sid/River, POV: various, most frequently River, Louisa, and Sid)

Part 5 Sick Leave takes place shortly after River is released from the hospital and is basically Bad Actors if Sophie de Greer had been sent to stay with River and Sid instead of an empty safe house because I was sad they weren't in that book. It's more plot, less whump, but it does feature a River fainting scene (ch. 8), plus it opens with Lech getting hit by a car, as is canon. (15 chapters, Sid/River, POV: various, most frequently River, Louisa, Sid, and Lech)

3) Do you wonder what Sid Baker's life might have looked like as she recovered from getting shot in the head? Girl, me too! One Step After the Other not only gets into that but also segues into the previous River whumptastrophe by the end. Two for the price of one! (7 chapters, pre-relationship Sid/River, POV: mostly Sid)

in retrospect (aside from maybe Catherine), Lech is literally the normalest guy to be put in Slough House. Like he literally was just a guy who got on the bad side of the wrong person, there was nothing really wrong with him. He only got super depressed AFTER getting sent to Slough House.

By Bad Actors and Clown Town, he definitely appears to be the 'straight man' of the office (the character in a comedy show who is shown to be relatively normal compared to everyone else), who is strung along with everyone else's shenanigans.

I finally got around to watching Squid Game, but didn't realize they had made one into an actual reality show and that's the one I've been watching. Thought it was taking a SUPER long time to get to the part where they kill them
