Still need to learn to animate (or just take more time to do more frames lol) but this was just a fun little thing I decided to do on a whim.
Mostly because I had this idea in the back of my mind for a while and wasn't sure how to execute it.
it was this part of one of Blue's comment explaining some Tomoe lore that made me want to do something like that:
If one Tomoe is something to deal with, I can't imagine what a handful it might becomes for Madara to have to take care of up to seven little rascal! I mean, he loves Tomoe, sure, but it must be tiring.
Still throwing Tomoe fanart at @stygian-blu, I'll never get tired of it!
I know this looks as if it was made by a 13yo but I can only say I was just playing around with motions and shit because wow things move
Get microwaved nerd
Winx Club: the reboot animation sucks
I've been putting this off but I said I'd do it so...
The animation in the reboot is horrendous.
Characters go cross eyed, clip through everything, disappear, teleport with no explanation and the flying/fight scenes look so slow and choppy.
Then there's the character designs and scene transitions, ugh it honestly looks half finished and sometimes doesn't even make sense.
What Time Is It?!
In the very first episode Bloom goes riding on her bike and encounters the Stella/Flora/Monster battle scene during the day only for it to suddenly be night when they put her down in a tree a few moments later.
I guess you could argue it was sunset but even then the sun doesn't set that fast and it gets worse because in the next scene the girls take Bloom through a portal at night but in the next moment they're all in Gardenia during the day as Bloom leaves for Alfea.
This happens again in episode 2 when Bloom goes back to Gardenia, it's night when she leaves the dorm but when she gets outside it's suddenly day time.
This happens a fourth time when the teachers return to Alfea from Cloud Tower. They go through a portal from CT at night to Alfrea during the day in a moment and then it just turns to night a few minutes later anyway.
It always seems to be night at Cloud Tower but it's never explained why(at least in the original it was always under dark clouds and sometimes rain) so it looks odd to say the least.
This makes it very difficult to gauge how much time is passing and the dialogue doesn't help as it either doesn't explain anything or makes it worse, such as Sky saying Bloom's been at Alfea three days in the first episode when nothing actually indicated that.
OMG What's Wrong With Your Face?!
One of the biggest issues with the animation is the way the character models emote or rather don't emote. The character models don't have much expression so when they try to emote they often just have one default expression at all times or the expression doesn't match the tension in the scene. For example during Tecna's turn in the simulation room she see's the other winx yelling at her for not being supportive enough of an upset Bloom, except Bloom looks more robotic and lifeless than Tecna supposedly is:
And when the animators do try to make the character models emote beyond what their plasticky programming will allow it gets scary:
And it doesn't end there. Sometimes the character's faces will just start glitching out and it's horrifying.
Aisha randomly goes cross eyed at least twice, foreheads break, faces deform, and eye brows disapear.
Teleporting!
At several points characters, and sometimes objects, teleport with no rhyme or reason.
In the first episode alone:
Bloom leaves for Alfea with Stella and Flora yet she arrives alone and meets the girls in the courtyard in the next scene.
Bloom's suitcase teleports behind her when she lets go of it to look around, then disappears entirely while she talks to Stella and Flora only to reappear in the dorm even though Bloom clearly doesn't come in with it.
Bloom arrives in the dorm with only Stella, Flora is already in the room before them despite the three girls being in the courtyard together only a moment earlier.
Stella sits on a statue one moment and in the next moment she's standing on the ground even though we never see her move.
Icy appears beside Bloom at the stable despite not being in the previous shot at all and vanishes again right afterward.
Likewise Icy pulls the remote for the Changelings collars out of thin air with no explanation as to how she got it.
And this is not limited to episode one either, during the magic test Darcy is paired with Diaspro but disappears for most of the episode afterward only to reappear with Icy and Stormy at the end despite not being with them at all before.
During the episode about Musa's concert, Musa comes up to the girls and stops a good distance for them. In the next moment Bloom, who was on the steps and is never seen moving, is suddenly next to Musa.
And when Stella is tricked into going on a date with a fake prince, she's caught in Darcy's spell but runs to Bloom and Brandon moments later despite the spell never being removed.
During one lesson Icy and her desk disappear from one shot to the next.
Disappearing objects
Turns objects don't just teleport in the reboot, they disappear too! From a pen on Bloom's drawing desk, the girls' instruments during Musa's concert, cups, Stella's wand, Bloom's hair and even Flora's wrist!
Clipping
There is so much clipping in the animation, especially when it comes to the girls' hair! Aisha and Bloom seem to get it the worst but they aren't the only ones:
That is not attached to you
The one thing I kept noticing was that certain things that were supposed to be attached to characters seemed more like they were floating beside the characters.
The biggest offenders are the fairy wings and Flora's hair decorations:
With the wings it seems like they were going for a sheer gossamer effect but the animation is so bad that the wings just look detached most of the time.
Robotic Characters
Another thing I kept noticing is that the characters, especially the winx, will randomly stop or stay completely still without blinking at certain points.
Such as Dark Bloom just standing quietly in Faragonda's office after Daphne calls out to her, Sally the fire salamander just stopping in the background despite the fact that she's supposedly rampaging in Magixia(ugh) or the winx just standing around without transforming until Bloom arrives despite an emergency going on.
It's unnatural and creepy.
Weird layering
There is some weird layering going on with the clothes, the one that stood out to me the most was Faragonda's sleeves:
It looks like she's got three!
And there is so much more. Fight scenes are slow and sluggish, flying is awkward, wooden, and one instance straight up copied from Bloom's transformation sequence.
And speaking of transforming, nothing except for the winx actually transforms on screen.
Wet hair that only becomes wet several seconds after getting hit with water and Mitzi for some reason gesturing to the clock when complaining about Bloom ruining her pants.
The character designs are hideous:
Why is Radius wearing a crescent moon? That's Luna's symbol!
It's just a mess.
The AI
There have been accusations of AI being used since the reboot was announced.
Iginio Straffi, the creator of Winx Club, insists it wasn't used at all.
But I'm just like
Because we literally have receipts:
In-between this, the awful animation, stilted dialogue, and that hideous doll commercial on the official YouTube channel I find it extremely hard to believe that no AI was used.
Kinger animation is done for now I'll color it later
Kinger: @thelovelyunderground
???: @dr3am-caf3
The animation isn't the best but I'll do more clean up later on but here you go :)
Comic
Here. Angst or something. It’s been like two years since I animated
