Honestly, I don't get why they won't let people burn the goat. It can be a whole proper festivity you know. Bring your family and kids and neighbours to the burning.

We have a similar custom here for Christmas where we burn oak tree branches. And the priests are there in the church yard, a whole sermon happens. And people gather and they bring their own branches.

And yeah, it's pagan. No other christians do it. But the church had to be extra creative and come up with christian explanations and modifications to a lot of our pagan customs because we're stubborn folks who refused to convert until they met us halfway.

Video presents traditional Serbian celebration of Christmas, that has preserved many ancient rituals. Here is shown coming of the first guest called položajnik. He will be showered with grains and then proceed to kindle badnjak tree burned the night before. Lady of the house blesses the water through the fire, then everyone drinks for good health. Video ends with spinning of the česnica bread before eating.
