I've heard/seen some things in my time working with the public but having someone essentially tell me the 5p bag charge is being used to fund a fake war against ISIS is a new one.

Last week I asked a woman if she would like a plastic bag for 5p or if she had her own bag. She looked at me like I just murdered her children and then informed me that she wouldn't be needing one. She was disgusted that I dare ask her. 

I didn't panic or stress. I'm used to the situation. Many people don't like the 5p bag charge. I thought perhaps this woman must have felt that 5p is a lot of money when you're spending £95 on a new leather handbag, so I respond with the reasons for the bag charge and that our company donated the proceeds to charity. I let her know that in fact many companies are making charity donations and listed a few stores surrounding my own that do. 

She then lets me know that I'm full of shit, the actual reason for the bag charge is so that the government can steal more money out of her purse and give it to all these wealthy Arabs, Russians and Chinese. She says they steal all her taxes, then there was a period of inaudible muttering as she inputted her American Express pin number into the machine to pay for her new handbag. 

She insists its all a conspiracy, that the 5p bag charge is to pay for weapons and that for all she knew ISIS were in on it too so they could buy weapons and that the war was all a lie. 

At this point I just wanted to exit the conversation before I caught stupidity from her, so I thanked her for her feedback, wrapped it up in beautiful patterned tissue paper inspired by a Moroccan (Arabic) designer and handed her the leather (sourced from Russia, constructed in China) bag she just purchased. 

I gave her a big smile and thanked her as she left the shop calling me a sheep.
