during the intros for the contestants, buck introduces himself as:

- buck, from los angeles

- an la firefighter

- a baker of about one year

and the other contestants are kinda judgy about him, giving him mean girl side eye and snickering about how easy it'll be to compete against him

meanwhile he's just so excited to be doing something new that he appears even less likely to be tough competition. it isn't until the second or third challenge that the other contestants are like oh shit...this guy is giving us a run for our money

during the show they ask each remaining contestant who they want to win for. the other contestants talk about their families and friends, as anyone would expect, and it's a very emotional time

now, the other contestants still don't really know how they feel about buck. they don't respect him as a competitor, but they appreciate his presence on the show

but when he talks about how he doesn't care if he wins, he just cares that he's doing it at all and he's doing it for bobby. he talks about everything and how it effected him

and not only does it make the contestants view him a bit differently, but the rest of the 118 watching at home too

one of the challenges is to create a dessert that somehow represents who the contestant is

everyone, both on the show and the viewers, expect buck to do something related to firefighting. a cake that looks like an engine or maybe flame cutout cookies. nothing like that is interesting enough to help him advance into the next round though

but buck has a hard time really coming up with an idea that he feels represents him. he's spent his entire life trying to figure that out, it's not like it'll just come to him on a baking show

so, in order to make literally anything, he panics and makes eddie's favorite dessert. he doesn't even necessarily think about it, just starts moving until he realizes that what he's made is the same thing that eddie tried and said he loved

during a challenge on the baking show, someone else's kitchen seems to be working against them: their oven won't get to temp, their mixer is broken, etc.

they begin to panic because there's no way they can get anything done within the time frame and they're going to lose

but then buck tells them that they can work in his kitchen alongside him, even though they're competing against one another. he says it'll be a fun extra challenge
