The quiet hum of the night was a welcome salve to Halsin's senses. The forest lullabies soothed his soul when he was far from the trees of the Emerald Grove.
The camp was still. Only the occasional rustle of a restless companion broke the silence, or perhaps the faint crackle of the dying fire. Halsin had quickly learned to treasure these moments of peace. They were rare gifts, during their volatile journey.
But tonight? Tonight the peace was broken.
A faint noise stirred him from his slumber. Wind, perhaps. Or maybe an animal venturing too close to camp. But then it came again. Soft. Deliberate. The unmistakable clink of glass against metal.
His brow furrowed and he sat up.
Sharp eyes scanned the camp until they landed on his pack, where a small figure hunched over.
Her hands were buried deep in his belongings, and to his dismay... truly, his heart sank at the sight... she held his small jar of honey. The one he had been saving for a rare moment of indulgence. A pang of betrayal pierced his chest, sharp and unexpected. Y/n had always been a trusted companion. Her quick wit, her sharp instincts a boon to their group's survival, he'd always believed. To see her now, stealing from him, it left a bitter taste in his mouth.
"Y/n," he called softly, his voice laced with disappointment as he stood, approaching slowly. "What are you doing?"
She didn't respond. Her movements remained slow, methodical even, as she pried open the jar and swiped her fingers through it.
"Y/n!" His tone sharpened, frustration bubbling to the surface. "You need only ask if you were hungry. I would have shared it gladly. But to steal—" He took a sharp breath, trying to temper his anger. "Why would you do this?"
Still, nothing. Not a word. She didn't even look at him, her focus entirely on the honey as she brought her sticky fingers to her mouth.
"Answer me!" Halsin demanded, his voice rising. He stepped closer. His large frame towered over her, casting a shadow in the moonlight. "Is this how you repay the trust I have placed in you? Speak!"
But Y/n remained silent. Her expression was blank, eerily serene, he thought, in a way that made his skin prickle. His patience snapped like a dry twig. He grabbed her shoulder, spinning her around to face him, his eyes sharp with a mixture of betrayal and anger.
"Look at me!" he growled. "What have you to say for yourself—?"
He stopped. Mid-sentence. The words dying in his throat.
For the first time, he got a good look at her. At her glossy, unfocused eyes. Her face, completely devoid of its usual sharp awareness. The slack posture, the clumsy movements... By Silvanus, he'd seen this look before.
"She's… asleep," he murmured, his anger dissolving into astonishment.
His hand remained on her shoulder as he stared. All his earlier rage leaving instantly, that sense of betrayal... it curdled into guilt, that sat heavy in his chest. "By Silvanus, what have I done?" he whispered.
He had misjudged her so gravely. Assuming betrayal where there was none.
Gently now, so gently, he shook her shoulder. "Y/n… wake up. You're not yourself."
She blinked. Slow. Confused. Her lips parted as if to speak, but no words came. Instead, she swayed slightly, her body leaning into him with the trust of someone lost in dreams. Halsin caught her instinctively. His large hands steadied her as she muttered something barely audible.
"Honey…" she mumbled, her voice barely audible. "… from the woods…"
Halsin blinked. Then, he couldn't help it, a laugh bubbled up in his chest, low and rumbling. "From the woods?" he repeated, shaking his head. "You truly are a creature of peculiar whims, y/n."
He chuckled as she reached out blindly. Her hands batting at the thin air before finding his chest. She weakly pawed at him, still searching for the honey. "You're relentless, even in your sleep," he said, amusement thick in his voice.
Carefully, he moved, grabbing the jar and setting it aside. Then he guided her back to her bedroll. Small shuffling steps. Clumsy. Y/n followed his lead with the pliancy of a dreamer, collapsing onto her blankets without protest. She muttered again. The words came out slurred but vaguely comprehensible.
This time, Halsin's laugh came louder. He covered his mouth quickly. Mustn't awake the others. "If the bees are truly so selfish, perhaps you should confront them instead of raiding my pack," he whispered, crouching beside her.
He crouched beside her for a moment, watching. Shaking his head from the absurdity of it all. This wasn't the betrayal he had feared, far from it. It was endearing, he thought, in its own strange way. A reminder of the quirks that made their group so unique and so special.
He brushed a stray lock of hair from her face making her stir slightly “Mmm…"
He chuckled, His shoulders shaking with mirth. "I'll be certain to hide the honey better next time, lest you mount another midnight raid."
He stood then, gathering the jar and the rest of his scattered supplies. Back into his pack they went. Though this time, he tucked the honey deep beneath his other belongings. No more temptations for her late night wanderings, he thought with a wry smile.
As he lay back onto his roll, the events replayed in his mind like a particularly amusing tale. A warm smile lingered on his lips. "Truly, Y/n," he muttered to himself, "Only you could turn a simple jar of honey into a tale worth telling."
And with that thought warming him more than any campfire could, he drifted back to sleep. Lighter in spirit. Grateful for the unexpected levity she had brought to his night.
