Celebrating Earth Day and Kartini Day in Nusa Lembongan!
Hai Tide Beach Resort was delighted to host the second annual Earth Day Celebration in Mushroom Bay, Nusa Lembongan.
This year’s event was a continuation on the theme from last year; namely an overall reduction of plastic use and proper disposal of trash on the island. The main purpose of the day is to educate the resident children of Lembongan in a fun and interactive way, in order that they fully understand importance of this issue for both the environment and also the future of their Island!
Together with the amazing support of The Kepala Desa (village leader) of Lembongan village pak Arjaya and the Secretary of Camat Nusa Penida pak I Nengah Seta Adyana The Coral Triangle Center who again played a key role in organizing the day along with Bali Hai Cruises & Bali Hai Diving Adventures, a very informative, fun and educational day was enjoyed by all who participated.
Ibu Icha Wirapatria did an amazing job as MC and also gave a fantastic & enlightening presentation. Two other key supporters of the event were Bottle for Botol, who focused on reducing single-use plastic, and Marine Megafauna Foundation who brought to light the importance of keeping the seas plastic-free. They explained that animals have a tendency to eat the plastic, often mistaking it for jelly fish, which then causes health problems for marine life, such as Manta Rays, Mola Mola and Turtles. They also illustrated how this eventually leads to human consumption as the plastic moves its way up the food chain, which can in turn cause serious health problems for people. The appearance of trash on the beaches and in the ocean also has a huge negative consequence for tourism which has a very important economic benefit for the island.
Earth day this year coincidentally coincided with the Indonesian national holiday Kartini Day, which is a special day to commemorate Ibu Kartini, the first woman in Indonesia who fought for women's rights and education. 50 school children from 5 local elementary schools were invited to participate and due to the Kartini Day celebration it was only girls who participated!
The event started bright and early at 7am with an inspiring welcome speech from the village leader Pak Arjaya, who discussed the importance of keeping Nusa Lembongan clean and green. Following this the activities continued with a beach clean-up at mushroom beach and a prize awarded to the school that collected the most trash.
The beach clean-up the girls built up a good appetite and we stopped to have a delicious breakfast provided by Bali Hai. Following this we had three excellent presentations from Bottle for Botol, Marine Megaufauna Foundation and The Coral Triangle Center all of whom focused on reducing and disposing of trash properly so that it doesn’t end up polluting the land and eventually end up in the sea, causing damage to the reefs and harming sea
Scuba diving and snorkeling plays a very important role in the tourism of Nusa Lembongan and in turn the economy for this small island, which previously used to rely solely on the income from seaweed farming. The plastic pollution is a real threat to the stability of the Island's economy.
The day was concluded with a fun drawing contest - the brief; to draw a picture demonstrating why we need to protect the environment. And we were happy to see from the amazing results of their drawings, that the children really grasped the concept of the day.
The Bali Hai group which consists of Bali Hai Cruises, Bali Hai Diving Adventures, Bali Hai Aquanauts, Hai Bar & Grill and Hai Tide Beach Resort was very proud to host this event and would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved, including the important support from the esteemed Pak Arjaya, the organizers, non-profits, presenters and most of all the 50 students who participated in making this day such a positive and educational event!
We look forward to celebrating again next year and making this an annual event of continuing education for the school children on the island!
