Maharaja Vijai Singh worshipping Krishna by Udairam Jodhpur c 1770 A personal piety of a ruler secured the prosperity of his dynasty, kingdom and subjects. Maharaja Vijay Singh (r. 1752-93) was a follower of the Vallabha Sampradaya, a Hindu religious community which version is Krishna. He publicly proclaimed his devotion by building to grand Krishna Temple in Jodhpur. Standing in the scenic Char Bagh (cross-axial four part garden) Vijai Singh is seen venerating Balkrishna, the child form of Krishna. The maharaja here takes the submissive position of a servant and holds a fan insignia (kiraniya) over Balakrishna — thus treating the god as his king and master. The priest, Gosai Giridharji performs the jhula seva (Swing service) .
