Imagine the potential for chaos if the royal visit had taken place in Season 3 (the first 5 or so episodes).

Sybil is still alive, and married to Tom, but the rest of the Crawleys haven’t fully accepted him yet. Would they even be at Downton for the visit? Mary and Matthew would be alive, healthy and married, and they would no doubt bicker at least once leading up to the king’s arrival

And, my personal favorite- O’Brien’s plan to ruin Thomas’ life is thwarted when the royal staff shows up and he meets Richard seven years early.

When Thomas realizes that Richard is continuing to stay true to his promise, his ice-cold heart finally starts to thaw after living for so long in the cold, bleak, relentless tundra.

I have this idea stuck in my head where Richard pays everyone downstairs (and potentially upstairs) to call Thomas ‘Tommy’ for the whole day as an April fools joke. I can’t stop thinking about it.
