Thoughts on 3x06 "You Can Tell the Heart of a Man by How He Grieves"

Good episode, maybe the best one so far? It may just stand out after the trainwreck that was 3x05, though.

Loved seeing the Jensens supporting Justin at the funeral & Chloe sitting with Zach. (I'm sorry, I like that friendship, alright?)

I was wondering when Mr. Walker was going to show up. (By the way, wasn't there a Walker family portrait in S1 where it looked like the Walkers had a daughter, too? You'd think she wouldn't miss her brother's funeral.)

I liked Zach's speech. I think I'll write more about it after listening to it a second time, but I think it showed how conflicted he was about Bryce and their friendship.

Mrs. Walker's speech was also good. The scenes where we see Bryce through her eyes are the only ones so far where I can actually see him as a good person. And I agree with what she said at the funeral: his (potential) redemption arc was interrupted and we'll never know what kind of person he would have been.

The way the funeral was interrupted was unfortunate and I feel sorry for Justin, Mrs. Walker, etc. After all, funerals are for the living. Those girls punished the people grieving their loss, not Bryce. I support their intentions but not their actions.

Can Clay and Justin stop keeping secrets from each other?

I was so looking forward to seeing Caleb meet Tony's family and instead we got one of the most heartbreaking scenes of the season. Christian Navarro knocked it out of the park in this episode. Kudos to him. I loved how they portrayed the situation and I loved how supportive Caleb was ("Your life is my life. Stay". EXCUSE YOU!! ♥ RIGHT IN THE FEELS.)

Tony's phone call with his dad & his goodbye to his little sisters were absolutely tragic & touching.

Unrelated to the episode: Apparently my Spanish is not as bad as I thought because I understood almost everything they said so YAY.

Clay is 100% a lawyer's son when he points out he never promised anything to Caleb.

Alex and Tyler at the gym are like little kids left without parental supervision, lol.

The pedal steel guitar: much liked, little loved and recently described as “the butter of instruments; not something you want much of on its own, but pretty much guaranteed to improve anything it’s added to.” Funny and insightful, but wrong. While still viewed as the character actor of the guitar world, the last few years have seen a small but influential group of musicians showing what the pedal steel can do with a leading role. Susan Alcorn has become one of the most interesting soloists in Mary Halvorson’s ever growing group; Chuck Johnson released the best album of his career, the masterful, ambient pedal steel meditation Balsams; Daniel Lanois followed up his very good Goodbye to Language with a baffling but enjoyable collaboration with Venetian Snares, and Heather Leigh’s semi-abusive relationship with the pedal steel has birthed disconcerting solo albums and a fruitful partnership with Peter Brötzmann. To this list of pedal steel pioneers, you can now add Barry Walker Jr. and his lovely, modest Diaspora Urkontinent.

Diaspora Urkontinent: Tectonic Pedal Steel Guitar: the title promises massive slabs of drone and distortion, but Walker’s music sounds less like the drift of tectonic plates and more like the drift of clouds above them. There’s a lightness that suffuses Diaspora Urkontinent, a consequence of Walker’s willingness to let the pedal-steel guitar speak for itself in its most recognizable voice with minimal interference from distortion, effects, or other instruments. In addition to his unfussy approach, Walker hasn’t forgotten his instrument’s roots in country & western and that most maligned of genres, exotica. Tracks like “Jack Hills, 4.404 Ga,” and “First Life” sound nostalgic and strange, as if they’ve come unmoored from bargain bin LPs and left to float and dissolve into unfamiliar shapes at their own pace. Anyone who has enjoyed Mike Cooper’s South Seas excursions will find much to enjoy in “Ediacaran Moonrise” and “Sweet Spectral Iapetus.”  

Diaspora Urkontinent does stray slightly from the path with the interesting but overlong “Late Heavy Bombardment,” which treats the pedal steel as percussion, and album highlight, “Finis Pacificae,” which utilizes actual percussion and multiple layers of viscous pedal steel goodness, but most of Diaspora Urkontinent shows the pedal steel guitar at its breezy, buttery best, the perfect record for contemplating drift, tectonic, cultural, or otherwise, while sipping a mai-tai under a high desert sky. Walker’s metamorphic compositions are more evidence that Alcorn’s long awaited resurrection of the pedal steel guitar is here at last.

The scene with Olivia and Jess was wonderful ♥

Oh, a few more seconds of Zach & Alex hanging out ♥ At this point I'll take anything, lol. Although I'm still trying to make sense of Alex's episode tbh so I don’t know how I feel about Alex at the moment.

In case someone didn't hate Mr. Walker enough, he also tipped off ICE and got Tony's family deported.

I feel like the wardrobe department was trying to punish Bryce when they picked the Hillcrest uniform, LOL.

I love that they went back to the tapes. (And "Killing Moon". They better play it in S4 too, it's tradition now.)

"It was Justin's tape. It should have been mine" might be the best thing to ever come out of Bryce's mouth. Like, thank you. Justin was guilty but not as much as Bryce the Rapist.

We are so lucky to have Justin Prentice in this show.

Bryce felt more in character to me this episode. I liked the scenes with Tony and the one with Olivia. I very much support the fact that he had regrets and wanted to apologize and make things better, but neither Tony nor Olivia forgave him/his family. It feels right. People can start over and become better, but their victims don't necessarily have to forgive them.

The flashback with Clay and Bryce also gave me a lot of S1/S2 vibes.

Wonderful scene with Olivia and Nora. I was hoping Kate and Brenda would get a scene together this season.

Can the police please find the real killer already? So they stop harassing Clay and his family?

I want to know who killed Bryce, but more than that I want to know what everyone was up to that night, especially Zach and Justin.

I'm off to bed now. I'll watch the final three episodes tomorrow morning. I haven't checked my dashboard since this morning, btw. I'll do that after watching 3x13. So comments, reblogs, etc. will have to wait. Tag me if there’s something I should see right away. ♥
