Salutations, anime fans. I am Gabriel Ramos, DJ and broadcaster for Toon Time Theater on the New Gabe Order Twitch channel. Now that NINJA KAMUI and IGPX: Immortal Grand Prix have ended, it's about time for another U-PICK poll. This time, I'm not playing around. You have until May 18 at 7 AM PDT to make your choices. When that time comes, I will end the Spotify peepshow and review your votes on both Tumblr and X. After I collect your votes and sum them up, I will reveal the next lineups for May 2024 before broadcasting Part 2 of the FRUITS BASKET (2019) Marathon.

Turns out MY ADVENTURES WITH SUPERMAN is getting a second season, but unlike the previous season, there will be Saturday/Sunday premieres, meaning that I am unable to live-stream the newest episodes when I return to Saturday morning cartoon blocks. You have two options:

A. Live-stream MY ADVENTURES WITH SUPERMAN on Saturday mornings only to be one episode behind the Toonami broadcasts

B. Live-stream MY ADVENTURES WITH SUPERMAN on Sunday mornings following the Toonami broadcasts, ensuring I live-stream the latest episodes possible

If you don't want me to live-stream that cartoon, I have Bartender (2006), Hell's Paradise (Jigokuraku), Kannazuki no Miko, SMILING FRIENDS Season 2 and FRUITS BASKET (2019): The Final Season as options. There is also Season 2 of HI SCORE GIRL, but if most of you vote for it, then it will be placed at the end of the lineup before HAIKYU!! as a Hall of Fame* program. I still want to sign off after HAIKYU!! to encourage viewers to get off their couches and play outside when a broadcast day concludes.

* The Toon Time Theater Hall of Fame is a sub-block dedicated to re-broadcasts of familiar cartoons previously shown on T3, as well as some classic cartoons from the Millennial generation to Gen Z.

If you are new to my blog, I host a Saturday morning cartoon block on the New Gabe Order Twitch channel called Toon Time Theater. This is dedicated to make Toonami's programs more accessible to people with curfews preventing them from watching the block. Not only that, it serves as a bridge between the Saturday morning cartoon blocks of the past and the late night anime blocks of the present. On Toon Time Theater, I dedicate this block to the latest and greatest of animation. Programs include Pokémon (since Journeys), X-MEN (1992), NARUTO SHIPPUDEN, ONE PIECE (Wano Country arc), DRAGON BALL Z KAI and HAIKYU!!. Unlike MeTV's offerings, this is for Millennials and younger generations that crave for new (and appealing) content.

On November 28, the New Gabe Order will host a special lineup dedicated to the launch lineup of Toon Time Theater, but with their first episodes being played to celebrate Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, I had to make modifications to the Toon Time Theater Spotlight Show so the 2001 Fruits Basket series gets used, and the original 2002 NARUTO series will be showcased, complete with a rerun of "Enter: Naruto Uzumaki!" None of T3 Express will be given a special launch lineup Spotlight Show, unless you count the NARUTO episode. That's the best you can get T3 Express-wise.

Also, I have decided to bring back HI SCORE GIRL and SWORD ART ONLINE just in time for the holiday season. On the Thanksgiving weekend, HI SCORE GIRL reruns will replace ONE PIECE, and I intend to bring ONE PIECE back following the season finale of Rent-A-Girlfriend. On December 7, SWORD ART ONLINE will replace HAIKYU!! as a Sports Time Theater program, considering the former's usage of swordplay (chambara).

The New Gabe Order Will Celebrate KQED Plus' (KQEH's) 60th Anniversary With A Spotlight Show Of The Science Fiction Night!

Salutations, anime fans. I am Gabriel Ramos, DJ and broadcaster of Toon Time Theater. October 19 will be a special day, because KQED Plus (KQEH) will turn 60 this year, and I wanted to showcase the programs of the Science Fiction Night that aired between 1996 and 2003. When I was born in Hayward, California, I had access to the network back when they were known as KTEH. However, I didn't know they aired science fiction anime on Sunday nights until I read about how Tenchi Universe aired on American TV networks for the first time. My brother got into Neon Genesis Evangelion because of KTEH, and since then, he watched the series from time to time.

On October 19 at 9 PM PDT, join me for a 7-series Spotlight Show showcasing select animated programs that aired on the KQED Plus Science Fiction Night back in the day. Plus, there will be a sneak peek of the New Gabe Order's special Toon Time Theater edition of Key the Metal Idol, which will reach the 30 year milestone this year.

The inclusion of Key the Metal Idol is dedicated to my late father, Oscar Ramos, who was into computers and got me (and my brother) into computer technology. I had to use whatever I learned on VEGAS Pro and OpenToonz to edit all 15 episodes so Twitch would be less likely to confiscate my channel due to live-streaming risqué content. (Thanks, Dad. It's been a month since you lived until your last breath. Hopefully I'll use all your computer knowledge to help others in this world until I die one day.)

All Aboard the T3 Express!

Lately, I've been thinking of my Japanese audience for Toon Time Theater. Usually I treat it as a late-night anime option for the Japanese viewers out there, but I decided to give them an easier chance to check out my anime live streams just in case select viewers are unavailable due to strict curfews. I'm happy Toonami Rewind will give American people a piece of the Toonami pie at a more reasonable time, and the same can be said for my attempt to live-stream a Saturday morning cartoon block for the Japanese people. As a result, I am going to commit myself to live-stream on (American and Canadian) Friday afternoons for a few select cartoons for 3 hours, counting educational and informational (E/I) programming. SAILOR MOON (1992) will be one of the few chosen E/I programs, and joining T3 Express are NARUTO (2002) and TeamFourStar's DRAGON BALL Z ABRIDGED. T3 Express will be mainly a dumping ground for U-PICK Nominees, reruns of earlier episodes for select series, and programs that wouldn't "fit" in my Saturday morning animation cram sessions due to insufficient timeslots. I will still use the 5-hour length for American and Canadian Saturday morning blocks as intended.

In case you were wondering, I will still have the Saturday morning animation cram session for American and Canadian viewers, with more up-to-date cartoons. T3 Express is just an afterthought for Japanese viewers that want to experience a Saturday morning cartoon block, which is usually an American tradition.

At least I was able to check this little-known anime series while Glass of God came out. I have yet to watch Glass of God, but I heard that is a more faithful adaptation to the manga.

Bartender 2006 VS Bartender: Glass of God (2024)

I am not a drinker. Most times I've had an alcoholic beverage the sharp, bitter taste of the alcohol always soured the drink for me. As a result, I have not tried too many drinks. Especially not some of the fancy ones in these two anime.

Yet, I still found myself intrigued by both the original anime from 2006, and its reboot from 2024. I've also read some of the manga, but not enough to give my full thoughts.

Bartender, for those that don't know, is about Ryu Sasakura, a bartender that is capable of making many drinks to help the people that come into Eden Hall, looking for 'something'. Whatever that may be, and Sasakura mixing a drink for their troubles.

It was episode 1 of Bartender Glass of God that got me interested, and the first few chapters of the manga that got me wanting to watch. I probably shouldn't have been surprised by there being an older anime.

To be clear, I liked both anime very much. They were great to watch after a day at work or just a stressful day in general as both have relaxed vibes. However, 2006 is more episodic, choosing to focus on the individual stories of the patrons more heavily than any overarching narrative. While 2024 does have an overall plot, but is still fairly light with it while trying to focus on the patrons at the same time. It sounds messy, but it does work with some episodes being more plot heavy than others. I personally preferred 2024 over 2006, but both were a joy to watch for their own reasons.

Apologies for the long post, but I just want to share my love for these adaptations and hopefully, if you're willing, you'll hear me out. I also apologize if I don't remember as everything clearly, but I'll do my best.

Minor Spoilers below cut-

Bartender 2006

This is the one with a style more similar to the manga, obviously, but unlike the manga which seems to have a narrative like 2024, this one doesn't make much mention of it nor Ryu's past. Not that we don't get anything, but it is definitely focusing more on the side characters instead. (This is also the version I watched first after my preview of Glass of God episode 1 and what little of the manga I read.)

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. The stories are wonderfully heartfelt. Mature in their handling, and make it easy to like Ryu and the people he helps. A few of the stories made me tear up, such as episode 3, 4, and 9, with a man holding onto past regrets of an old love, a couple growing distant, and one of Ryu's failures as a bartender. Episode 8 was fun, as we see Ryu actually stepping in where normally he keeps himself as unbiased as possible when it comes to his patrons' problems. Episode 11, the final episode, is probably the only one that I don't feel the same for, but the sentiments expressed when it comes to Ryu's work are nice.

The OP is wonderful, but the ED is what stands out. It's live action with the singer being shown singing the song. However, if you pay close attention, you'll notice that the bartender changes the drink being mixed each episode, that drink being the one that had been most prominently featured. It should also be noted that 2006 here goes a bit deeper into the drink history and meaning than 2024 does.

Bartender: Glass of God (2024)

I have no idea why they decided to recreate the anime, but I'm glad that they did. I enjoyed the original anime, but, as I said before, I prefer this version.

Unlike 2006, this one focuses more on the plot line of Miwa attempting to recruit Ryu to Hotel Cardinal so they can open their newest bar. We also get characters that appear to be exclusive to this version and watch as they develop. From Kyouko coming into her own as a bartender to Kelvin wanting to gain acceptance from his father for his dreams. It is a little awkward that Miwa seems to just happen to be there for so many of the characters personal stories, but isn't too distracting.

Unlike 2006, Ryu gets more of a backstory here, though, admittedly not by leaps and bounds. However, it's still more characterization here than 2006, where we get to see a more goofy side to his character on occasion, as well as see him outside of Eden Hall. Like the 2006, there were stories here that brought a tear to my eye, but episode 11 was probably the most hearwarming, with Ryu finally talking with his old mentor and fulfilling an important request. Another, earlier one featuring a business man and a hospital nurse who both have deeper problems than they both think of each other. It should be noted that some of the stories from 2006 are also reused and redone in this version.

Personally, I prefer the song and visuals of the OP from 2024, but I feel the ED in the original 2006 version was much more creative, but this ED was sweet too with a nice art style.

However, what is boils down to is simple - Much like the drinks Ryu serves, it will depend on your taste which version you'll want. Do you want episodic stories with a heavy focus on personalized stories and the history and trivia of the drinks? You might prefer 2006.

Or do you want a more overarching narrative and gradual character development with drink trivia and the personalized character stories a little more interwoven into the plot? If so, the 2024 version might be what you want.

Regardless of the choice, either one will be a relaxing experience with wonderful character stories and moments that will very much tug at the heartstrings.
