Relational databases, "descendants of powerful programming languages used on mainframe computers," provided the cover story for this issue, which insisted they weren't just for experienced programmers any more. The article on 2400-bps modems noted that they were faster than "most introductory articles on telecommunications" had supposed "before the summer of 1984" was the fastest possible speed for data over telephone lines, but they hadn't sold as well as analysts had predicted; there were suggestions that the speeds they could manage would soon be doubled or quadrupled, anyway.
