Quick Study
Miyuki yawned as he stretched. He had another sleepless night and had been using that as an opportunity to rewatch the tape of their recent game. He scowled as he remembered how close they had been to losing. If it hadn’t been for Kominato’s quick reflexes… Miyuki shook his head. No use thinking about the “what if”s now. He had to focus on what the team can improve to win the next one. He still had almost half the game to go through. He glanced at the time on the clock: 1:35am. Damn, he had promised Sawamura they would spend the day together in the city. At this rate, he probably wouldn’t even get a chance to sleep before his excitable pitcher barged into his room for their date.
Their date… Miyuki’s chest still got that twisting and vaguely empty feeling like he was in free fall when he thought about his relationship with Sawamura. It had been three months since the pitcher had cornered him with a (characteristically loud) confession after practice. A small smile graced Miyuki’s lips as he remembered the awkwardly earnest speech and the hope shining in Sawamura’s golden eyes. For months he had been hounding Miyuki to catch for him even more than usual and it hadn’t escaped Miyuki’s attention the way the younger boy positively glowed with every little bit of praise he gave him. Sawamura was always so careless with his affections, so loud with his feelings. Miyuki had felt his walls start to crack in the face of the other boy’s sincerity. It warmed him and the cynical voice in him that had given up on making connections, on being loved, grew quieter each time Sawamura chased after him, after every intense pitch that smacked satisfyingly into his glove.
Sawamura had wormed his way into Miyuki’s heart before he knew it.
Miyuki got up where he was bent over the notes and headed to the vending machine to grab a can of his beloved coffee. He needed to focus and finish watching the game, sleep be damned. He needed to see that grin on Sawamura’s face as Miyuki led the team to another victory.
As Miyuki got close to the vending machine, he heard muffled scuffles and hushed voices in the darkness of the indoor practice hall. A giggle and a hushed “Eijun-kun…!” was clear in the quiet of the night.
Miyuki’s mind went blank. He turned towards the noise, his heart thumping in his chest. He must have misheard, right? Miyuki slid out of view into the darkness next to vending machine as the door opened. A part of his brain coolly took in the sight of the younger Kominato as he walked out into the moonlight. Miyuki noted the flush on his face, the skew of his shirt, the redness of his lips like they had just been bitten. He saw a small embarrassed smile on a red face. Then another body stepped into view and all he could hear was his blood rushing in his ears. With the number of times he had studied that body on the mound, he would recognize that silhouette anywhere.
Sawamura.
A heart in free fall slams into the ground.
Miyuki felt like he was hit with a baseball to the chest. Sawamura’s hand lifted to wave goodbye and he said something Miyuki couldn’t hear. When did he stop breathing? Miyuki blinked and forced his lungs to start moving again. He should have known better than to believe that someone would actually want to stay with someone like him. The thing was, he wasn’t even surprised. He knew what his teammates had thought when he and Sawamura got together. He had seen the looks on their faces, had heard Kuramochi’s concern clearly through the teasing, “Are you sure, Sawamura? Our Miyuki??” Sawamura had laughed at off.
Miyuki’s gaze flitted to the pink-haired boy. Yes, Kominato was a much better candidate for a boyfriend than Miyuki was. Kominato was out of hearing range when he stepped out from the shadows. “My, my. What are you doing out at this hour, Sawamura?” the forced nonchalance in his voice was clear, despite his best efforts.
The guilty look that flashed through Sawamura’s golden eyes told Miyuki all he needed to know.
“It’s not what it looks like! I was just helping Harucchi—”
“Amazing.” Miyuki interrupted flatly.
Sawamura gave him a confused look, “What-”
“Amazing that you were stupid enough to cheat on your catcher. I guess you didn’t really want to be the ace, huh.”
“What? Of course I want to be the ace!” Sawamura’s voice started to get louder, “This isn’t what it looks like, Miyuki Kazuya!”
“Oh? Then what is it, hm?” Miyuki’s eyes took on a cold and calculating glare as he stepped closer to Sawamura. “You think I can’t tell when someone’s been kissed? Don’t lie to me, Sawamura. You are a thousand years too early for that.”
Sawamura blanched. “W-What? Harucchi and I weren’t doing anything like that! You’ve got to believe me!”
Miyuki couldn’t listen to this anymore. He couldn’t listen to the way Sawamura’s voice filled with passion like it always did, making a mockery of all they’ve been through as a battery and of that confession that had become such a dear memory. He had been careless to open his heart up like that, to let someone else in. And to the surprise of absolutely no one, he got hurt. He really should have learned his lesson by now but he had been drawn in by the other boy’s smile. The light in the pitcher’s eyes and the fire in his spirit shown so bright and Miyuki was a moth helpless against its warmth.
And he got burnt.
Miyuki could feel the walls around his heart closing again, freezing into place until all he could feel was ice.
“It’s over,” said Miyuki as he turned to walk away. He didn’t let himself pause before turning his back to the other boy, didn’t let himself slow down as he heard Sawamura sputter in hurt and confusion. He let the loud calls of his name land against the ice of his heart and fall unheeded. Miyuki could barely feel his legs but he forced himself to keep moving, to keep moving forward. He had made a careless mistake once; he will not do it again.

“Right,” she says, unfolding the card. “let’s see why I’m here ruining my Saturday.” She skims over it, brow furrowing. “We’re here for the Semi-Final Playoff game for the Madison County, Duchess County, Beacon County, West County, Mid-Summer Intramural—Jesus Christ—Amateur Baseball Association sponsored by Jiffy Lube, the VFW, and the Knights of Columbus.” She looks up over the card. “Is this a joke?”
