Re:ZERO Episode #26: Some *Actual* Villains

I got round to starting the second season of Re:ZERO and it was pretty good. I admit that I’m intrigued by the road ahead so it did it’s job as a prologue for the second adventure. This time around, it feels more like an adventure or a quest and Subaru Natsuki feels more comfortable as a character in the shoes of the hero. This episodes set up the premise that Rem has been forgotten by humanity again except only this time, Subaru’s checkpoint appears to render Rem un-saveable as he is already in the back of the carriage with Emilia post-victory which is interesting to me.

Mainly what I’m thankful for is some actual villains that seem far better and a lot cooler than Betelguese (who is now referred to as ‘Petelgues’ in the subtitles for some reason). You are introduced to the Archbishop of Greed, Regulus Corneas, and the Archibishop of Gluttony, Lye Batenkaitos who are both responsible for stopping the convoy of wagons holding Rem, Crusch et. al and attacking them. They drive right into them and are just blown to smitherines in no time at all and make short work of Rem to boot. The two of them are far more unsettling and just give off bigger evil vibes than Betelguese who I’ve always viewed as a goofy, overacting mystist with false nails.

Regulus Corneas outmatch them all on the magic front pretty easily and Lye Batenkaitos obviously eats them all. Except he doesn’t; what he actually does is eat their existence. Puck informs Subaru that the most likely theory is that Rem, who is now comatose, has had her existence wiped by Archbishop of Gluttony. Crusch is also effected but is able to use her motor functions. Everyone is informing her of who she is and there are two mysteries here: Why Subaru Natsuki is able to see through this strange curse and why Rem is totally out of it. There is also the tiny nugget of Crusch having her arm ripped clean off at the scene of the crime and then getting out of the situation which isn’t explained but I’ll let it go for now.

All this information is conveyed to the viewer in this committee scene with Subaru, Crusch, Wilhelm and Felix who are trying to tackle the situation with Crusch but before any of this. Subaru shoots through the camp of all the soldiers who were attacked in the ambush looking for Rem and eventually finds her but the doctor is unable to save her so Subaru kills himself immediately to find out what the save point is and it is the back of the wagon as per discussed. I’ll decide later whether or not this scene was worth it but I just thought I would mention it because it seemed kind of random at the time.

For just a simple set-up episode, I quite enjoyed it. It was an interesting dip into the attitudes of the people in the world that I don’t think has been properly explored before. It interested me that Felix and Wilhelm are surprised about the existance of the Archbishop of Gluttony because it makes me think that the concept of “The Seven Deadly Sins” doesn’t exist in their world and that they don’t know all that much about the witches cult and it’s almost as if the cult started doing serious damage upon the arrival of Subaru into the universe.

I like episodes like this and even though it was a bit boring, there was a lot to look forward to and I enjoyed how they set up the road ahead and did so in such a natural way. I loved the music and how it was directed especially towards the end and at the beginning. I liked the dialogue between Emilia and Subaru as the credits were rolling and the storytelling of how Subaru is managing himself differently. It’s abundantly clear that this episode is playing the long con on me and I’m intrigued.

I love these villains and I hope I see more of them in the future episodes to come and I can forget about the disappointment of Beetlejuice. Some actual threat to the main characters would be nice and I’m thankful that the plot focus has been taken away from Emilia because I do find her pretty boring by all accounts.
