Batman #79 by Tom King & Clay Mann
i know it’s batcat and all that but i can’t help being charmed by how kind the narrative is to bruce in batman #79, it’s been all suffering and despair for so long and bruce doesn’t get to be soft (like he really is, at heart) because there’s never been the right time and space for that but now he really does just get to be himself & to see a life beyond the vow
like when we get selina talking about gotham and yes, bruce is all too aware of the urgency of the situation but this is pre-#77 and maybe the world’s not so bleak just now so he just. calls her beautiful and later, even admits he feels better. it’s still hard to find the right words (”cat, i... it wasn’t the street”) but he does get this
and he doesn’t want to stay just because he’s got selina by his side, he wants to stay because he’s finally allowed to be himself and the thing is the story itself has never permitted that before
even bruce choosing that new beginning (”we met on the beach”) is him finally choosing happiness for himself and saying out loud what we know he’s known all along, he is capable of being happy and being batman
It's Batman Day, and in light of Batman 78 and 79, I decided to break my silence on Tom King's Rebirth. Eppur Si Muove: The Boat, the Street and What Batman Rebirth Is Really About
