I think I figured out why Bruce and Matt have had no luck locating Terry and haven’t even seemed to put much effort into it. Their only investigative technique is assuming a suspect and then asking “Did you do it?!” That doesn’t work well with locating someone with amnesia, and randomly confronting dark haired and saying they must be Terry McGinnis men probably wore thin before too long

So I’m not at all surprised that Melanie and Barbara were both swiftly eliminated as the identity of the mystery Batwoman, except neither of them were really eliminated? I mean, I doubt that either of them are her, but all we have to go on are their denials, and if one of them distrusted Bruce enough to steal the Batsuit behind his back, why wouldn’t she deny being Batwoman when confronted? It’s not like either of them were seen at the same time as Batwoman. Matt might believe that their denials are enough proof, but Bruce should be smarter and more skeptical and need more direct evidence. Except that he has the same case of the dumbs as everyone else in this run.

Unpopular Batman Beyond comics opinion

I think Dana is better written than Melanie in the current comics. Yeah, Dana's been underwritten and not treated well, but she's mostly been consistent and understandable. The biggest WTF moments for her have been out of the blue assuming Terry would quit being Batman and later asking him to quit or else she'd dump him. Otherwise she's been written as a young woman who moved on with her life after her boyfriend was assumed dead, only to have several bombshells about him dropped on her in succession and never really had a chance to process them and talk to him about them.

Whereas Melanie has been written as "whatever appeals best to Terry that also suits the story". She's reintroduced as caring first and foremost about winning Terry back, despite not having seen him for years (with possible exceptions for stalking him to steal/secretly take photos of him). She decided to become a vigilante because she thinks that's the best way to prove herself to Terry, and she comes to that conclusion because... she has a direct line to the author. She's a badass action girl who can break into Wayne Manor and escape and rescue Terry from mortal peril... but she can get easily captured by an amateur villain and held hostage a minute later. She wants to help Batman/Terry, but she's only seen on a date with Terry in the middle of the Joker crisis and never even offers to help him, because Jurgens was writing a story about the Bat Boys menaced by the Joker and a girl had no place in it. Her biggest reaction to finding out that Terry is Batman is to marvel that he kept it from her all these years, even though they haven't seen each other in all those years. Her whole attitude towards Batman does not match when we last saw her in "King's Ransom", where she still disliked him and disliked him showing up in her life now that she's gone straight. Her past as a criminal is only given lip service to explain her costume and skills and why Terry didn't trust her, the particulars of her situation (being born into a criminal gang, expected to join the dangerous family business, resenting the disruption and feeling guilty over what they did while also feeling loyalty towards her parents, etc.) don't affect her current opinions or actions at all.

So yeah. Dana's characterization might not be appealing to as many fans and it might be underdone, but at least it's consistent with her character from the cartoon and builds on what's happened in the comic. Melanie's is disconnected from what she was like in the cartoon and it swings to whatever makes things easiest for the story.
