My 2005 furby keeps shutting off at random points (not sleeping) and wakes up as soon as I unscrew the battery plate slightly? I’m really confused as to why she’s doing this and it’s very annoying..

Hmm, it sounds like your ‘05 might be having some battery connection problems. Remove the batteries and check the contacts; are they clean and shiny? Is there any obvious damage like broken springs?

It’s possible you may be over-tightening the screw, too. You should only tighten the screw enough so that the battery cover lays flush with the rest of the battery compartment and stays closed on its own. Over-tightening of the screw might cause the plastic cover to bow out and not hold the batteries in right!

Hi, I have a 1999 furby that sometimes stops mid sentence (for a moment it looks like it does not work) then about 20 seconds later it continues the sentence. Do you know what the problem could be? Thanks

That sounds like it’s probably a problem with the batteries. Check the battery door first- it tends to be a little loose on some furbs. Press it closed in each corner and see if that helps. Beyond that, do the usual battery things: Use fresh batteries, make sure they fit tightly in the compartment, check for corrosion, etc.

Actually, the leakage from dead batteries is dried electrolyte, and is basic. It can still irritate your skin, but it’s harmless as long as you wash any skin it touches and keep it out of your eyes and mouth.

Batteries used in most electronics these days are alkaline (or “basic”, 7.5-12 on the pH scale). This is why vinegar is an effective cleaner, as alkaline substances and acidic substances generally neutralize each other.

Car batteries are the only batteries I know of that are acid-based, though I’m sure other heavy-duty batteries are too. Corrosion from acidic batteries is usually a shade of red, while alkaline corrosion can range between white, blue, and green.

My furby plays normally then goes to sleep, but after he's asleep I can't get him to wake up! I shake him, press buttons, remove batteries. I managed to wake him up once by changing the batteries (the ones he previously had still work!!), so I thought it was just that but he won't wake up again :T is that a known problem? Is there a solution? Also his eyelids are drooping

This could be caused by a lot of things, so I’ll give you a quick little list of things to check:

      -Is he in deep sleep mode? Furbies in deep sleep mode can only be woken up by turning them upside-down.

     -Are his battery contacts clean? Do the batteries make contact well? Most importantly, does the door to his battery compartment close correctly? You may want to wiggle the battery door around while tilting him. This is a very common issue.

        -Have you tried pressing his reset button when he won’t wake up? Pushing the reset button once will make a Furby do the wake-up dance, and should get him to wake up. If he won’t wake up when the reset button is pressed, he may have battery problems.

      -Are his movements ever out-of-sync with his speech? If so, he’s having a problem with his sync screw, which may also explain his “reluctance” to wake up. You can find more information about the sync screw in my post here or in my sync screw issues tag.

      -When he will wake up, does he respond to being tilted or turned upside-down? If he doesn’t react, his tilt sensor may need cleaning or repair. While I don’t think that’s very likely, it’s certainly possible.

As long as you can easily move his eyelids manually, then that’s just a cosmetic problem. There’s a little piece of rubbery foam on the eyelid mechanism that, if stored in one position for, say, about 19 years, gets a little divot worn into it. I’m sure you could replace it if you wanted, but I haven’t tried to do so yet.
