On Campus and Off. The VCOM medical brigade began their day on campus touring the clinic. The 30 med students and teachers from the Spartanburg, SC campus have spent one week conducting brigades in six different communities. Francisco and Yahoska Mayorga and their three sweet daughters have now arrived in Panama to begin their PAM or 5-month internship in the El Valle church. Board Threesome on Campus. Baxter is blessed with 20 men and women who serve as board members from seven States and Honduras. Their vision, direction and leadership is critical to the growth of this academic and medical institution. Today these three board members, Robert Scott, Noe Pérez, and Darryl Schlottman were on campus interacting with students and administration. Two days ago board member Dean Sutphin left for the States after spending 10 days here with a VCOM medical brigade. Edison Castro Tells All. Edison shares his numerous experiences at our clinic, the national hospitals, with our doctors, Hondurans and our students: “As my trip comes to an end, I want to express my gratitude to all my friends old and new who made feel at home while far away from family, while in Honduras. I am humbled and honored for the opportunity to serve my patients in Honduras. Thank you so much for allowing me to enter your lives. Thank you for giving me the chance to heal your wounds, relieve some of your pain or perhaps just listen to your story. I’m here to help you recover, get you back on your feet, so you can take care of yourself and your family. I’m your doctor, your friend, your confident, so don’t doubt for a second to come see me whenever you need me.” Edison had been to Baxter on a one brigade, while this time he and two other VCOM students did a full month’s rotation. One highlight was the generosity and love showed to the children and parents in our nutrition program with a party and clothes giveaway for them. Misty, Sarah, Aria and Chris, VCOM Med students. We have been having a wonderful time since our arrival. We have had the opportunity to work in the Baxter Clinic as well as the Emergency Department at Hospital Escuela and the Labor and Delivery Unit at Hospital San Felipe. In addition to improving our international medicine skills and Spanish speaking ability, we have had the chance to learn about Honduran culture. By visiting a local orphanage, hiking in the national park, and exploring some of the churches and museums, we are getting a taste of all that Honduras has to offer. #baxterclinic #baxtervcom (at Tegucigalpa, Honduras)

First to Respond. For four consecutive years VCOM School of Medicine has given our students a First Responder’s seminar. The two-day event addresses the most common emergencies that they will face in their communities and how to proactively respond. VCOM then gives the student a backpack containing basic supplies for treating individuals. What Happens Tegucigalpa Stays In ... maybe not. So we took VCOM med student, Bradley Kasper, to experience the culture of Honduras in the quaint village, Valle de Angeles ... little did he know this would mean he'd have to take a Honduran bride. The friends of this soon-to-be-bride had fun having her poise with single men around the city plaza. Secretly I believe Bradley was glad to get out of Valle de Angeles and back to Baxter and our clinic. #baxtervcom #baxterclinic #baxterhonduranculture

His Stomach Ached. VCOM School of Medicine teamed up with our clinic for their first medical brigade of 2017. 5 days = 587 patients! On Wednesday, 4/19, the brigade work at the Diamante Church, seeing 137. A seven year old waited all day to be seen, complaining of stomach pain. But treating a child with no parent present is against the medical school's protocol. The doctor must explain the treatment and medicine use. All the while he waited all day long. Finally our nurse asked if we could at lease do a physical exam. He was underweight, but other than that he seemed healthy. After some questions we found out that his stomach ache was the result of hunger. His mother works cleaning homes, but the money isn't enough. Our Nutritional Program feeds a lot of children in this community; the need is so huge.
