There was a specific kind of quiet that only existed in the bunker after a hunt.
Not silence... the bunker was never fully silent, it breathed in its own way, the ventilation and the hum of old electrical and the distant sound of water moving through pipes that had been here since the fifties. But the quality of quiet changed when you were home and the job was done and there was nowhere to be. It settled differently. Heavier, but in the good way. The way a blanket was heavy.
You'd noticed it before you'd noticed much else about living here.
You'd been back three hours.
The hunt had been fine. It was clean, relatively, two days in southern Missouri, nothing that would make the highlight reel of bad jobs but nothing easy either. You'd come home with a bruised shoulder and mud in places mud had no business being, and you'd showered first because Dean had insisted and you'd been too tired to argue, and now you were on the couch in the main room in clean clothes with your hair still damp and the particular boneless exhaustion of someone whose adrenaline had fully metabolized.
Dean was in the kitchen, humming softly.
You could hear him... the quiet knock of cabinet doors, the low sound of him moving around in there, unhurried. He cooked sometimes, when you were home. Not for any ceremony, not for anything except that he liked to and it was one of the few things the job hadn't taken from him.
You didn't offer to help. You'd learned that he didn't want help in the kitchen, wanted the particular solitude of doing something with his hands that wasn't going to hurt anything. You understood this. You had your own version of it.
You listened to him move around and looked at the ceiling and let yourself be still.
He came out forty minutes later with two bowls of something that smelled like it had been made with real stock and actual vegetables, not the canned kind, and he set one on the cushion beside you and folded himself onto the other end of the couch with his own, and you sat up enough to hold the bowl in both hands.
You ate without talking for a while.
This was something you'd had to learn about Dean. It was not that he was quiet, exactly, because he wasn't, but that his silences weren't empty. He didn't fill space with words when he didn't have words. Early on you'd read this as distance and it had taken time to understand it was the opposite. He was most comfortable with people he didn't have to perform for.
You were still a little amazed, some days, that you were one of those people.
"Good, right?" he asked with a wiggle of his eyebrows and a tired smile.
"Really good." You meant it. "Is that rosemary I taste in there?" You asked, your tone conveying just how impressed you were with the elder Winchester.
"It needed something."
"It needed that."
He made a small sound of satisfaction and went back to eating and you looked at the side of his face. The jaw, the particular set of his shoulders when he was actually relaxed, which was not how he held himself in the field and not how he held himself with most people — and felt the thing you felt sometimes, looking at him.
It wasn't simple. You'd given up calling it simple a long time ago.
It was something that had accumulated slowly... not a moment but a series of them. The way he'd been the first time you'd been hurt bad on a job and he'd handled it carefully, not roughly the way you'd expected, his hands precise and gentle in a way that didn't match the rest of him. The way he knew how you took your coffee without asking. The way he sometimes stood in doorways for a second before entering a room you were in, like he was just confirming you were really there.
It was all of that, compacted into whatever this was.
You'd stopped trying to name it accurately. You just let it be what it was.
He took the bowls back to the kitchen when you were done and you heard him rinse them, and then he came back and sat down in the same spot and you shifted without thinking about it, turned toward the arm of the couch, and he settled in behind you, the solid warmth of him at your back.
This had started — well, you weren't sure when this had started.
It had not been discussed.
Most things between you hadn't been discussed, they'd just become true, accumulation again, small choices that became habitual arrangements that became something neither of you had named out loud.
You leaned back into him slightly.
His arm settled over you loosely, not holding, just there.
Outside the bunker it was October and cold and the world was doing what it always did. In here it was warm and the light was low and you were tired in a way that felt okay for the first time in a few days.
"Your shoulder," he pointed out, his tone serious but not unkind.
"It's fine."
"You're holding it, Sweetheart."
You hadn't noticed you were. You made yourself relax it, "It's just bruised. It'll be stiff tomorrow."
He didn't say anything. After a minute you felt his hand move — slow, asking — and you shifted to give him access and he just rested his palm against your shoulder, not pressing, just warm. Like his hand could do something about it just by being there.
It kind of could, actually. You weren't going to tell him that.
You turned your head slightly to look back at him and he was already looking at you, close in the low light, and you thought for the hundredth time or the thousandth that he looked like somebody who'd seen too much and was still here anyway, still choosing to be here with you, which was not nothing. It was the opposite of nothing.
"Hi," you said, which was a dumb thing to say at this distance but you said it.
Something in his face did the thing — the quiet opening, the thing he didn't do with most people, barely did with Sam, the thing you'd learned to recognize as him actually being somewhere. Present. Not performing, not managing, just here.
"Hi," he said back simply.
You turned back to face forward. His arm stayed where it was.
Later, the TV on low — some show neither of you were watching, just sound, just company — you'd shifted somehow into a different arrangement. Dean turned into his side, your head somewhere around his shoulder, his arm properly around you now. It had happened the way these things happened between you, incrementally, no single decision.
You could feel him breathing. Slow and even, slower than it was in the field, slower than it was when something was wrong.
This was your favorite version of it. You didn't think you'd ever said that out loud.
"Dean."
"Mm."
"Nothing," You paused, a soft look on your face, "Just checking."
"Checking what."
"That you were still—" you tried to find the word, "Here."
His arm tightened slightly.
Not a lot.
Just a little.
"Here," he echoed. Quiet. Factual.
You closed your eyes.
You didn't mean to fall asleep.
You came back to awareness slowly. The TV was off now, the room darker, and you'd been fully asleep and you knew it.
Your body felt heavy and warm and gone in a way you'd been able to relax into because you were safe and you trusted that, bone-deep.
Dean was still there.
He was awake — you could tell from his breathing, just slightly less even — and you didn't move for a minute, just lay there and felt him breathing.
"You didn't wake me," you stated groggily, your voice uneven from sleep.
"You needed it, Sweetheart."
"How long?"
"Couple hours."
You should probably move, maybe go to bed properly.
You didn't move.
"Were you just sitti—"
"Yeah," he interrupted softly, his voice barely above a whisper. Like that was a complete answer.
You supposed it was.
He'd just stayed.
Dean had been content to stay, apparently, while you slept.
You turned your face up toward him in the dark.
He looked down at you, and the light from the hallway caught his eyes and you thought, again, this person.
This specific person.
You reached up — not thinking about it, just doing it — and touched his face, your thumb at the edge of his jaw. He went still in the way he went still when something surprised him but not in a bad way.
"Hey," you said again. Softer this time, your thumb rubbing gently across his bottom lip.
He turned his head slightly into your palm, just slightly, the smallest motion in the world.
Then he leaned down and kissed you, slow and careful, the kind of kiss that wasn't in a hurry and didn't need to be, that had nowhere to be except here. You felt it the whole way through, warm from the center out, his hand gentle at the back of your head.
When he pulled back he stayed close, foreheads almost touching, his eyes fluttering open.
"Okay?" he rasped breathlessly.
"Yeah," you answered with a gentle smile, "Really okay."
He exhaled — you felt it — and settled back, and you tucked back into his side, and he reached over and pulled the blanket off the back of the couch and got it around both of you without dislodging you, which was the kind of thing he just knew how to do.
The bunker breathed.
The hallway light was enough to see by.
You were tired and warm and your shoulder would be stiff in the morning and tomorrow there would be another case on the board and another drive and another motel and all of it, all of it, the whole relentless weight of the life you both lived.
But right now his arm was around you and the blanket was warm and Dean Winchester was breathing slow and even and here, here, here.
I find it interesting that in his profile, Darius states he dislikes taking care of living things; but in his events and cards, he often ends up caring for MC, for example making her rest by his side, carrying her, eating with her. I wonder if MC is an exception or if he has ulterior motives... I can only speculate since he's always so secretive :( (another reason why I love him though)

my shorthand answer would be- i think its actually both tbh, and that they r not mutually exclusive.
now “caring” for her was smth i believe hes grown into; i don’t think he really care for kate from the start per se. that part specifically take time and just spending time with her.. or vice versa (as he implies it). tbh i think by his 2nd bday story he is in love with her- that said he still has his own sorta baggage and all that jazz to sort through, e.g. the stuff with the emperor. so in this sort of “caring” or “emotional attachment” department, there has definitely been a shift over time. in one of his bond stories he states that in the beginning he ate messily to let kates guard down, but that this time, he may be doing so bc he was the one who let his down- i think that is a true testament to how he become more emotionally vulnerable with kate over time.
but i think he did initially approach her bc of ulterior motives or that he was intending to use her, given she was crown’s fairytale keeper. e.g. we do see him use her to try to get closer to william too! and to be clear- i dont think him getting close to her to use her is inherently a bad thing.. well rings route is a different story but if we put his role in there aside, darius hasnt really actively hurt kate otherwise for the sole sake of “using” her or for his ulterior motives. and while kate may be a sort of key to what he really wants, he also tends to passively observe both her own actions and reactions. which would then in turn sorta snowballs into smth more on a personal, an emotional level. but that sorta development may not necessarily stop him from trying to use kate in a way that would benefit him, whether he realizes or not.
but yk that feeling of like having friends and, they each have a “role” to fulfill that benefits you? for example you might have a friend you use as like a place to vent bc theyre good at listening or giving advice. or one friend might be the one you go to for those laughs bc they r funny. maybe a friend who is a social butterfly and has connections, and can introduce you to more people or to good places to go. its not that you dont care for those friends- they just also happen to have a “role” that benefits you. i kinda view darius and kates relationship similarly..! i think the feeling of caring for someone and using them for your own benefit can coexist together.

i do have this one story where i started fucking my friend on the side (NEVER DO THIS BTW IT ALWAYS ENDS REALLY BAD) but basically at my uni 'halloween weekend' is always the weekend BEFORE halloween, so it always falls on my birthday (october 25th). i was seeing my friend for a while and no one knew about it like our entire friend group because we didn't wanna deal with the awkwardness.
so basically it was the night before my birthday, we all went out to the bars and were all dressed up. i went as cher from clueless so i had this skirt on but the skirt barely fit it was sooooo short😭😭😭 AND ALSO WE WERE REALLY DRUNK so the entire time he was grabbing my ass and asking if i wore the outfit just to provoke him (which yes) LITERALLY WHILE MY FRIENDS WERE AROUND US and no one noticed because everyone was cooked. literally grinding against me.
we end up having an afterparty at their apartment, they invite a small army like literally maybe 30 people there, some guy started dj-ing? and im a big smoker so i wanted to go smoke a joint, it's the day before my birthday yk. so im like "hey..... wanna go outside and smoke???" and he was going to say no bc he was enjoying just drinking but i was like "you DEFINITELY should come outside and smoke with me" and so he came with me.
we were in front of his apt, smoking and then of course he's pushing me against the wall and making out with me. i'm gonna ramble a little about the au in return because i need excuses to talk about it tbqh~ well okay its maybe a bit more than a ramble. your ask just has it rolling around in my brain.
so you're actually kinda not far off, as far as chase! they stay in contact actually for most of the 15 years. while chase stays with the brigade until he just can't anymore; he never pressures robert into trying to take his dad's place, and while there is still a brother relationship, he also ends up acting somewhat as robert's mentor post-robbie.
-> he's the one usually patching robert up, giving advice, et cetera. the one making sure he actually eats and sleeps somewhere other than the suit's cockpit at least three times a week.
it's not til towards the end that robert starts drifting from him; so the like last 2-3 years pre-mm fall they've had significantly less contact. robert feels so bad about it, esp as chase keeps trying so hard. but he just. doesn't have it in him, yk?
so yeah no chase going oh god is he okay!? is very much A Thing lmao. like the only reason robert was even able to do his bullshit attempt to get shroud was because chase had no idea about it. and he's by robert's side instantly and like forcibly reconnects himself with robert once he's out of his coma.
-> also, especially since it's what happens if you let the time run out, he absolutely does attack the reporter. chase is just face palming from the back of the room.

first and foremost, since i'm going to use my flambert au where they met super early on, it's flambert for the ship of the story. like it's very much meant to give sophie/nate (leverage), mike/fi (burn notice)...
-> but even pre-z team entering the picture, like. they're not in a traditional relationship. they have pretty significant gaps of not seeing each other and maybe the most they do is like, text. or sometimes not even that (like when chad/flambae is in jail for example, tho not exclusively).
-> so like admittedly, while they never date anyone or even try... they're not like forbidden from sleeping with others, et cetera. hell flambae even specifically ends up having to have like a pretty select list of fwb. because he knows that they 100% are chill and wont ever want anything more than sex from flambae because they know they aren't gonna get it. like those two are a known quantity in each others lives to those who know them.
-> robert is only vaguely more functional of a person because of flambae and chase. but even flambae has had to deal with robert's sinking sense of self and his distancing sometimes and especially in recent years. again it's not that robert wants to, but well *gestures to him* he is not doing well.
soo, will there be poly z team? i like the idea! but i'm not 100% sure yet. again it's really gonna come down to like, how it plays out and how it feels. where the muse wants me to go. it probably wont be very 'traditional' poly z team looking? like i don't really see golem having traditional romantic/sexual interests, for example. and i'm not like a fan of visi by and large as a romantic option. but i can tolerate her more as one in a poly setting?
but i also acknowledge and love that everyone wants a piece of that cookie lmao soo maybe it'll just be like. deeply cares, intimate, and even sexual. but yk flambae is his primary partner, nest partner, et cetera. esp bc everyone else has like their own pairs too.

the arctic sinkholes arent even sinkholes honestly.. its an explosion outwards rather than an inwards crumble. you can see the debris along the edges along with the scattered debris that was launched to the surroundings.. I think the furthest they found debris was 90 meters? or maybe it was 900 meters.. something with a 9 in it.. and then they took a scan in a lake in Alaska that had a sinkhole hidden in it! it looked like it was boiling bc of the methane gas escaping the hole! anyways but the scan showed that the permafrost actually thawed enough to create a chimney to the surface! and the chimney exposed the fossil fuel layer!! thats actually kind of really bad tho bc that can and will contribute to climate change. scientists dont even know how much this will effect their estimates on the rate of climate change yet!! but countries are definitely underestimating them in their estimates. see, no one really paid attention to the fossil fuels bc they were supposed to be stable but not look whats happening!!! and the melting permafrost is ALSO exposing greenhouse gases as it melts!! guys this is kinda bad...
also really cool thing that I probably already mentioned but the indigenous peoples in Alaska and northern canada actually utilize the permafrost !! they dig little cellars to keep their whale meat good to eat!! bc yk a whale is pretty big and its kind of hard to eat all at once for a small community.. also they want it to last as long as possible so they dont have to go hunt too often!! its pretty dangerous!! but with the permafrost melting, their little natural freezers are melting and theyre not as cold anymore!! this is really bad bc whole communities could starve or need to hunt more fish and whales! dangerous and overfishing is a real risk! honestly maybe it wouldn't be much of a risk for them.. this BIG issue would probably be with corporations overfishing and whatever..
