Beach and Stars [RP]
honeybee-hayes:
She’s not entirely sure when she stops keeping her gaze on the sand or the ocean. Maybe it’s the moment she notices his gaze on the sky and he’s telling her about the stars and his ‘bird. Maybe it’s the moment he laughs and begins to fully relax. She stands as he suddenly breaks into a sprint, smiling and shaking her head. She hesitates as he calls to her, pulling his large jacket tighter around her small frame. She eventually folds up his jacket and places it atop her shoes on the sand before running down to the water, doing a front flip and landing with her feet in the water.
John’s mouth is open in a little round O of surprise, the bottom of his jeans wet and cold from where he’s been splashed. Seawater is crawling up his legs, soaking into the fabric. A big wave hits the back of his knees, nearly buffeting him over and this is what shakes him out of his stupor as he flails to get his feet better planted in the wet sandy seabed.
“Gee!” He exclaims, wide eyed and impressed, “I didn’t know you took gymnastics in the Army, Lieutenant.” John is teasing her now, lightly ribbing as an elbow comes up to nobble against her upper arm. “Any other skills I don’t know about under your belt?”
She blushes as his mouth moves against her palm. She shakes her head and smiles, rolling off the sofa and onto the floor before picking herself up and dusting herself down. "A beach walk with you sounds lovely, John." If not a little perfect.
“Fantastic.” John’s stupid smile is all warm and charming and idiotic as he extends his elbow for her to loop her arm through. “Shall we Lieutenant?”
The beach is warm and cool in the evening light; filtered through palm trees and off sparkling waves and John silently drapes his jacket around Bea’s shoulders, just in case she’s cold.
He’s not. Sure it’s chilly out, but the first of the stars are just beginning to peep their little faces out of the deepest indigo stripe of the sky; looking like tiny scattered jewels dotted into constellations. John’s got his head angled back, drinking in the starlight that warms his skin, his breath pearling in the chilly air. A hand comes up, charged with some comment about the constellations, to point out Five - her hull a point of gleaming light amongst the others.
The laugh that bubbles off those lips is bright and brilliant and John kicks his shoes off; toes curling in the sand and it’s not entirely clear, anymore, where the starlit beach ends and where John Tracy begins. Suddenly, he’s not a just boy, but he’s a cosmos with skin; flecked and glowing in the waning evening night and a bright, full moon as he breaks into a sprint towards the shallows; where the sky meets the water and reflects it back up in an endless black cycle.
“Come on Bea!” The Cosmos turns, waving and shouting. “The water’s great!”
She hums. "Yes it is." Then she reaches out and places her hand over his mouth to shush him as she reads. As soon as she finishes her paragraph, she moves her hand from his mouth and puts the book down. "What were you saying?"
John, a little startled, blinks; blue eyes wide as a hand shoots out to cover his mouth. The young man’s lips are very warm and very soft as they brush against her fingers and it tickles when he mumbles something vague into her palm, his breath hot over Bea’s skin. He laughs when the fingers draw themselves away.
“I was just wondering what you were up to, Lieutenant.” He says, his eyes watching her hands closely for another attack. “You’ve been sat in here a while, and if you’re free, or, at least, bored of my Astrophysics book, I was wondering if you’d like to walk down to the beach, just to pass some time? If you’re not in any kind of objection to my company that is?”
She's on the sofa, upside down, once again trying to understand that astrophysics book. She understands some of the smaller things - but when they link into more and more things, her brain gets confused.
“Is that my copy of ‘A Theorized Guide to Astrophysics’, Bea?” A warm voice chuckles from the doorway and John is quick to slide into the seat next to her, careful to keep a healthy distance between them. He’s found sitting on the sofa with Bea may occasionally lead to a concussion. Occasionally.
“Any particular bit that interests you?” he peers over her shoulder, curiously eyeing the text and diagrams.
